Even in the very beginnings of a power exchange relationship, when you don't “trust each other with your lives” yet, nothing in the emotional connection can be private.  Not one fear, lust, kink or emotion can be withheld in the beginning if you plan to succeed.  You may not have each other's banking information at that point but, nothing is secret when relevant to exposing who you are, what you want, how you feel or what you do. 

To exchange control, you both must expose yourselves in order to learn.  How can you start a power exchange if you don't know what makes the other person tic, what power to give or take?  There can be no secrets, especially if it conflicts with paying respect to the bond.  Neither Master nor slave can hold secrets or limit exposure if they are to succeed, not even in the name of respect.  There must be complete exposure.  Treat the power exchange with respect, remain exposed and steadfast in your roles.  -Kalon  Eric

If you hurt her and she likes it, that is still Sexual Sadism.

They don't include bondage which is suffering to a masochist!
According to most medical and academic reference materials sadism is recognized as the inverse of masochism.  Masochism gets credit for all the good things like sexual pleasure or gratification of having pain or suffering inflicted, often consisting of sexual fantasies or urges for being beaten, humiliated, “bound”, tortured, or otherwise made to suffer, either as an enhancement to or a substitute for sexual pleasure.  Often I see reference to being “bound” (bondage) in definitions of masochism but they always omit bondage when describing sadism.   Why is that?  If the two are dynamically inverse, then why go out of the way to mention bondage under the broad umbrella of “suffering” for masochism but leave it out for sadism?  It’s just not fair I tell you.  We sadists enjoy tying people up as much as the next guy.  –Kalon Eric

S&M doesn’t have to include pain!
I meet many masochists and sadists in self denial or they aren’t self-aware.  Many people think that you have to be a “pain slut” to be a masochist, you are wrong.  Many think that a Top/Dom/me and/or Master that uses humiliation but doesn't inflict pain isn't a sadist.  You are wrong.  Physical pain is not the only measure of a sadist or masochist. 

Sexual Sadism is the recurrent urge or behavior involving acts in which the pain or humiliation of the recipient is sexually exciting.

Sexual Masochism is the recurrent urge or behavior of wanting to be humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer. 

The confusion is because there is a huge difference between Sexual Sadism, Sexual Masochism, and Sadistic Personality Disorder or Masochistic Personality Disorder.  Unfortunately, a sadist is a called a sadist whether or not they are involved in consensual Sexual Sadism or have Sadistic Personality Disorder and grew up torturing animals and pulling the wings off of a fly.

All you bondage enthusiasts that think you walk a different line than sadists or masochists may be quite mistaken.
