Gonadal intersex (or "true hermaphrodite"):
Rare condition in which the child has both ovarian and testicular tissue, either in separate gonads or as hybrid "ovotestes." Reproductive tracts, genital anatomy and gender identity are variable.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (or adrenogenital syndrome): Genetic error in adrenal glands causes excessive secretion of androgens during fetal life. Genitals of female children are masculinized to a variable degree. Psychological effects include an increased likelihood of same-sex attraction in adulthood.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS, or testicular feminization): An XY (chromosomally male) fetus lacks sensitivity to testosterone, so develops external anatomy and gender identity of female, but lacks internal reproductive tract of either sex.

Partial AIS: Like AIS, but with reduced rather than absent sensitivity to androgens. Child may partially virilize at puberty if testes are not removed.

Hypospadias: Condition in male children in which the urethral meatus (opening) is located on the underside or at the base of the penis. Represents an incomplete male differentiation of the genitalia, but it is not necessarily considered an intersexed condition, especially in its milder forms.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kustur-Hauser syndrome: Failure of development of vagina, cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes in genetic females. Cause not known. James Benson may have had this syndrome, although his male gender identity is atypical.

Vaginal agenesis: Failure of formation of vagina, for a variety of reasons, including MRKH syndrome.

Cloacal exstrophy: Severe congenital malformation of pelvis, including (in males) lack of a penis. These boys usually develop a male identity even if castrated and surgically reconstructed as females.

Klinefelter's syndrome: Genetic males with one or more extra X chromosomes (XXY, XXXY). Anatomically male but infertile.

Turner's syndrome: Affected individuals have one X and no Y chromosome. Ovaries degenerate during fetal life, in other respects anatomically female. Short stature and lack of secondary sexual characteristics without treatment.

Hermaphrodite: Old medical term for an intersexed person, given new life by some intersex activists.

you know if people would just look more at science instead just seeing some fashionable verbage and say that is a great lable for nothing more then sexually mixed up people   i am come on  does anyone read up on facts anymore or just assumes hey they re cool so they must be right rofl

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: term definition please (6/8/2008 5:13:32 PM)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersexed

has a great chart on definitons as well.

note: intersexed is no relation to transsexual, no relation to transgender.   they are of a completely different catagory.  intersexed is almost 100% physical without gender issues unless the surgery is performed on them at birth without knowledge/consent to the patient to force them to live/be the wrong gender.

azropedntied -> RE: term definition please (6/8/2008 5:15:21 PM)

Well thats why i inquired to "read up on facts " and learn .

I would rather have someone ask for facts than assume.
Or, Latex, are you making your comment in regards to Faery?
This is the place to get a definition from an expert, rather than hunt one up on the web and hope you got one that is at least somewhat realistic.
And I am sure there are plenty of other people who wondered but never asked.

In some cases, surgery isn't required.  Just dumb parenting.  I have a friend who has an intersex condition and was forced to live as a boy even after she started menstruating.  "He" had to find ways to take care of hygiene in the boys' bathroom at school without getting caught.  Talk about screwing up a poor kid's head!

Kinda my line of thinking as well .I tend to always seek , learn , and grow .There is always something to be learned upon this journey .Again thanks for helping me .

it is rare that an intersexed baby is NOT fixed at birth with the dr playing god.  very few slip by without being touched because in some cases you wont know until puberty if your intersexed.  i was forced to live a boy as well... but without knowledge/consent.  i was finally diagnosed at age 35 when they found the genitalia inside.  i have ais.
they thought my pms issues were from my heart condition.  we know now what it is from.   edit: i never had an endocrinologist till i was 32...i bet they would have found it sooner if i had one in my teens.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: term definition please (6/8/2008 5:30:12 PM)

I know a couple of intersexed people, and it is always such a shock when I am not thrown off by them. All but one is happily living female, but seem to get a hell of a kick out of being far more femenine than I am, since I am genetic. Most of them I knew had parents who acted like if they ignored the differences, theyd grow up and go away.

I don't remember what my friend's condition is.  I just remember her saying everyone thought she was boy when she was born so she slipped under the radar.  No one figured it out until she hit puberty and started developing as a girl.  Then she not only had to deal with all the health issues of her condition, but transgender issues on top of it.  Her mother still won't let her wear dresses at home.  It's nuts.

femininity is a personality and intersexed is genetically female as well.  in fact..genetically both.

Hello faerytattodgirl. Now this is just my opinion but I think that maybe you are an ''expert'' at freaking out ''uneducated'' people. Personally, I find you very delightful  and do not see any unsurmountable problems  in having a meaningful relationship with the inter sexed ... as long as they are not vanilla, of course. RL.
