kisshou -> not vanilla (10/30/2005 3:14:40 AM)

Whoever came up with the idea of putting vanilla under a new posters name was obviously a Sadist. We have all read the many and varied posts with gasps of outrage upon finding the label vanilla under their name. I think like most people the first thing I did upon reading vanilla was look for a way to change it. After a fruitless search for a settings button to fix it, I then luckily stumbled upon a post that explained it. Then I felt dumb for not having figured it out (new poster = vanilla). Immediately I decided to put up enough posts to get that horrible label that was so innacurate out from under my name.

I wonder why someone else's label bothers both myself and everyone else so much. Is it that important how others see us? Is it a matter of trying to present your true self to the outside world and feeling vanilla is a big lie we had been forced to pretend to be before discovering the community. I am usually not much of a rambler but I guess the psychology behind it interests me.

I bet a date with the person who thought it up would be pretty cool ;)

I never really understood why it is such a big thing for people, maybe I just don't pay attention to what it says. For me, I didn't even notice it until someone else said something.

I'm always surprised when folks ask about it because it was obvious to me that those labels are based on post count in the very first thread I read.

I honestly didn't even notice untill someone pointed it out.

Those who complain don't feel secure enough within themselves yet. When they do, IF they ever do they won't complain about someones label.

I thought it was funny myself. I have been on boards that call you a newbie and that is just as bad.

Why is it bad that someone who knows nothing of you, beyond that you are new to whatever board you are on is labeling you with an inaccurate term?

People are people, it is going to happen in all facets of life.
