So I'm wanting to do some cane play, but don't have a cane. I don't feel like waiting for something to ship to me; I want to pick up something locally. This is basically an experiment to see if I want more. I have available to me in short driving distance a Lowe's, a Menard's, a Walmart and a Target. I am specifically wanting something in the wood category...I have the "off the blinds" lucite rod available, of course, but I want something closer to rattan...I don't think there are any handy-dandy rattan canes hanging around locally, though, and don't want to spend (from what I read) far too much time straightening bent rattan...that kind of effort would involve a higher level of interest than I have at this moment...gotta GET that level of interest first. Anyway, most of the chain stores carry pretty much the same inventory, so mostly I'm asking for which dowels you've found the best, etc.
Anyone?

I have seen varied lengths and types of bamboo stalks at hobby and craft shops. the harder dried ones make a decent cane . Figures my boss called me as i was editing this. I have also seen shorter smaller lengths of banboo in the walmart crafts section
sorry if this isn't what you sought for ideas

Cane fishing pole, you can find them in any decent store that sales fishing supplies.  Buy a few, cut to the size and thickness you want, then enjoy.

Whatever you do... don't get a dowel. I adore canes... but being hit with a dowel is obnoxious. ^_^  It would suck for you to miss out on a great thing just because of shoddy equipment. :P

one thing that I like (and I will probably get flamed to hell for this) is a tomato stake. Dom Depot carries 48" ones for 97c I have one as is, and one that I made into a double... leaves nice markes

Go to the thrift shop, get a fishing rod of bamboo, fiberglass, or whatever, cut off the guides, trim to the length you want, and pop it into a bicycle handlebar grip with some Gorilla glue...  voila!   6 bucks and 25 minutes tops.

The problem with using wood dowels is that because of how they are made, most are not strong enough.  IF you know what you are looking for and find one that the grain flows all the way straight down the dowel, they are fine but if it doesn't they will break easily.

Most garden sections of places like Lowes have 3/8 diameter bamboo rods for use as plant stakes.  Bamboo fishing rods are now collector items aren't they?

Just remembe, caning isn't at foolproof as something like flogging, you can hurt someone pretty effortlessly, bruising too.  Caning over previous strikes is potentially a quick way to draw blood so remember that depending on your goal.

Mass reply here...

For some reason (I know partly it's because I read more than a few "poor substitute for rattan" comments), I shy away from bamboo. Any other alternatives?

Lynnx - Thanks, I read a few recommendations for dowels, but I value your opinion!

Michael - Don't worry. I may be looking for quick and easy in the equipment, but I do my research before I use anything. And I think you're right about the fishing rods...

Split bamboo fly rods, like Fenwick Voyageurs are what collectors are paying for... you obviously move in very elite circles
...us common folk go for an actual piece of dried and varnished bamboo... 3 to 4 bucks new

Tomato stakes made from bamboo or plastic. Thin wood dowel rods shoved into water hose or sheathed in shrink tubing. GM car/truck/van antennas that are one piece. If you have a local Petsmart that sells equestrian supplies or a tack store, you can pic up a werendorpher or dressage whip and just trim off the end. Those make wicked canes and the less expensive ones go for 10 to 12 dollars a piece.

The reason people like rattan is it is light weight, low mass and ret resiliant.  More mass, more impact.   That allows more sting with less damage although less in reference to canes is only a matter of degree.

Also, most of the time it doesn't split, shatter and splinter like bamboo and wood and some plastics. :)

Went out today and picked up a bamboo and a plastic (actually I think it has a bamboo core) plant stake. Tonight, we experiment!

FYI Don't use fresh bamboo from your yard without drying, sanding and finishing it.  It has these little "hairs" that stick everywhere and feel...well just WRONG.

I've actually heard that bamboo is a big no-no due to the danger of splitting. However, to be fair, I have no good alternative. If you're looking to do some very hard caning (or use the cane for an extended period of time), you definitely should invest in a rattan cane. They're not expensive.

I wanted to pick something up locally and no one here has rattan canes on hand. Bamboo is frequently recommended, though one is also cautioned.

The experiment was a success! I'll be ordering a rattan cane soon. :)

Hey Mickey, I think she liked it...

Try these on for size if you are looking into canes http://www.swtchr2.com/evil_stick_family_tm.htm

Added to my shopping list...I love whenever I can get things in green; it's my favorite color and hard to come by in toys!

OP, just as a reference...here's an article on Sensuous Caning by Conrad, who has presented at various kinky events for many years. Includes a lot of useful information on safety and "how to" for caning.
