I generally don't like to discard stuff, but you can get a new air conditioner for much less than you'd pay a professional to service an old one. There is a point of diminishing returns. I think the only way you can make out on this is to find a friend who is an A/C guy and barter with him for service.

That is kinda what I was thinking. I've seen small window units sell brand new for under $100.00.
