Currently, VUDU is representing that they have 6000 movies in their data base, plus a limited TV show file.
Their selling point is that they've contracted with studios to eventually get to a point where 1st run movies will be available simultaneously to theatrical release. Nice marketing promise, but I wouldn't buy it planing on that outcome. The reasoning is that it will reduce the reason for pirating. Don't see how that will eliminate the guys currently selling CAM versions of the new Raiders movie for $5.00 in the Fashion District, but down the road who knows?
I'm interested because the current data base includes many foreign and older movies, often available for free viewing, that are difficult to get anywhere. The search tool lets you dig by any actor, genre, and time period. VUDU also has high definition capability, and great audio.
For me, the biggest difference to something like Netflix ,or even a Blockbuster subscription, is that it provides instant gratification. No drive, no on-line ordering and waiting. You want to argue about the worst movie ever made, 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' or 'Ishtar'; and you can see as much as you can stomach of both that night. Best part, afterward, no re-packing, or no trip back to Blockbuster. You get 30 days from the date ordered to watch as much as you want without an additional charge. Also cool is that, since it is on-line, it adds to their data base daily. It also shows movie clips of new releases and makes recommendations based upon your buying history.
The only problem is currently the box only stores 50 movies, less if HD. However that is just to keep purchases and doesn't include 'retails'. I suspect that if VUDU takes off, its currently in limited distribution only through Magnolia/Best Buy, they will sell expansion cards.
The system gets delivered and installed today. I can't believe its going to take 12 'man-hours' of work, but I can't wait to come home from work and try it out.
The question now is; what is the first movie to watch in Blu Ray? The salesman said that the best application would be one of the animated films by Pixar released in BluRay format. beth's in her glory. she wants to get all the old Disney movies, put on her 'onesie', lay a blanket on the floor and watching they all. 'Bee-Movie' was his recommendation. Supposedly it best shows the 1080p capability of the TV. However, I want something that better utilized the audio side. When we were having the receiver and speakers demonstrated they used the D-Day beach landing scene from 'Saving Private Ryan'. The sound was amazing! I'm leaning to something more in line with a BluRay version of Star Wars or something along those lines. Is there BluRay porn?
