hm if you the cage like you mention, i used 3/4 inch copper, the dowels might have been 5/8ths not 1/2 inch, i just grabbed a dowel and tested how it fit in the 3/4 copper tubing and used the size with the tightest fit. One thing this allowed (by putting the dowels in the tube) i was able to get away with the thinner wall 3/4 inch tubing. and that saved a lot of money, and the cage is very rigid
