CYPRESS, Calif. -- Things are getting ugly at Southern California gas pumps -- and we're not just talking about the record prices. Some drivers are turning to violence.

A La Palma doctor was arrested Monday night after police say he grabbed a tire iron and threatened a driver who cut him off at a Costco gasoline station in Orange County.

According to witnesses, Dr. Antonio Reyes, 58, was among a crowd of motorists waiting in line at the pumps at the Costco on Katella Ave. around 5:40 p.m. when another vehicle cut in front of him. Apparently angry about being cut off, Reyes grabbed a tire iron out of his vehicle and confronted the driver, Sgt. Tom Bruce of the Cypress Police Department said.

The other driver locked himself in his car and called police. No one was hurt.

Reyes was arrested and booked for investigation of brandishing a deadly weapon in a rude, angry or threatening manner, a misdemeanor. He was later released.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, Costco-- known for providing discounts for members-- has seen an increase in crowds at its gasoline stations.

At times, 10 to 20 vehicles line up for a chance to cash in on the cheaper gas.

I don't know what is funnier; waiting in line at Costco for a penny difference, or the fact that a Doctor was the one waiting in line and the protagonist of this incident.

Per today's reports the Costco price at that station is $4.28/gal. In the neighborhood ARCO is selling it for a penny less. But look at the bigger picture. If another station was selling it for $.10 more per gallon filling an SUV 24 gallon tank on empty results in a $2.40 'saving'. That has to be one bad Doctor to wait any length of time to realize that savings!

Maybe if we were teaching math instead of political correctness in the California school system it would be easier for drivers to do the math. How about a word problem. If idling for 15 minutes waiting for a pump burns a 1/10 gallon of gas, how much time should you spend waiting in a line idling to save $0.01 per gallon? Bonus points if you amortize your hourly salary and include it in the calculation.

Last summer, I saw a couple of big fights break out at an Arco station near the Massage Therapy clinic I used to own. That particular Arco is well known for selling it's gas well below the price of EVERYONE else in town, so it always has some pretty big lines. It's not uncommon for people there to lose their cool and start brawling.
I had someone even get aggressive with me one day there, until I got out of my car to pump my gas, and they were suddenly looking at a 300 LB weightlifter. Was kind of funny how quickly they calmed down, and I never had to say a word or even really look their way LOL

Does Wal-Mart still discount their gas if you use one of their gift cards? The nearest Wal-Mart with a gas station is too far away for me to bother but my brother was saving some money on gas doing that.

They do....I have relatives in Oklahoma who do that.  They will buy up a 500 gift card and use it for gas for the month just to get the 5cents off a gallon.

Dr. Reyes needs some anger management, I am actually not surprised.
Medicine is a very stressful field.

Thanks for the story, I love a good gasoline thread! [:D]
Keep em coming.

Hell.....the good doc has it all wrong....If you're that angry that you would loose control and land yourself in jail, it would be much more worthwhile to find and knock-out a petroleum industry chieftain instead of your average citizen. [8|]
