FelinePersuasion -> Cracked dogs paws (10/30/2005 10:55:39 PM)

I was wondering about crumbly paws, my cockerspaniel is 15,one of his paws is breaking off bits of cracked paw bit when I touch his foot. should I be worried, he is after all really old so I expect that their feet like ours would get all dry and stuff. I tried finding info on it and stuff online but there's nothing related to my search needs.

You might want to try gently rubbing a little hydrocortizone creme on it. That should help relieve any itching or irritation and help keep it from drying out and flaking.

Have you noticed him licking it excessively? If so, it could be a hot spot. The cortizone should help with that too. If not, I'd take him to a vet. Either vetalog (sp) pills or a shot can help with hot spots.

mmm no, not the paws, he is rather fond of licking his fur though lol all though that's another subject. do you think the cortizone would moisterize too? all his paws are dry but it's the only one showing signs of flaking.

Considering his Breed you might want to shave or at least triim all those foot feathers too. Just becareful what you use since he will lick it off. Best bet is call a vet explain his paws are cracked and ask what they suggest you use.

yeah, I do trim the fur off his feet some because cockerspaniels are*very* fury and the feet pick up stickers. I will call today, last night though they were closed cause it was like one am lol. they said try moisterizing his feet

Do a quick search on Bag Balm dog paws. You will find many articles swearing by it!
Here's one excerpt:
Bag Balm Ointment has a similar consistency to Vaseline. It is a bit thicker, and doesn’t come off as easily. In my opinion it has a vanilla like smell, but it is very faint. It did not seem to cause any pain to my dog when I put it on her opened wounds. It did seem to keep her paws nice and moist. The reason this product seems like Vaseline is because it actually is made with petroleum jelly. But it does also have the extra added benefit of Lanolin. This is a main ingredient used in most lotions. The active ingredient is 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (no I could not have spelled that if I wasn’t looking at the container). My dog's feet healed completely in about 2 weeks which if you had seen them you would not have believed. The vet also told me that it was a good thing to frequently check a dogs paws in the winter time and if the pads seem at all dry begin to add Bag Balm. It will prevent the pads from becoming dry and chapped.
Bag Balm is pretty easy to find. I've seen it at WMart and sometimes even Walgreens/CVS/Eckerds. Craft shops are now carrying it for people who knick up their fingers a lot. If your dog licks it off, wrap a bandage (nonadhesive of course) around it and then seal off with tape. If this is not available to you, consider a sock or handkerchief.

oh sorry, that line was from the excerpt about foot checking but she's right, that's a good idea... i understand your dog's feet thing, my dog does that too so everytime he's in my lap i make it a point to play with his feets ;)

I do too, I tell him to behave and I grip a little firmer and he just wines but lets me have his foot, other wise he's like grrr give that back you! and snatches it out of my hand.
