Hold on. Hijackers pipe down. Right in the title is the the word spaceship. The OP clearly indicates a supposition about a race or races that are able to travel to the Earth, but decide not to. It doesn't matter where their planet is.

Let's say the range is limited to ten light years, well then they can get the last ten years of information. I think that would do it.

The current state of our technology is that phased array antennae do exist, and we are nowhere near being able to travel to their planet. We might have made it to Mars in my lifetime if they hadn't FUBARed everything.

And you know what, now that I think about it, that pisses me off. In August, Mars will be the closest to Earth as it has been in 73,000 years.

If we hadn't fucked around for the last five generations we would be there. Well, in a couple months.

All BUT the last ten years of EM siganls would be accessible to "aliens".

I won't even go into how wrong Steel is about everything. Suffice it to say that the big brains at NASA have figured out that aliens won't use English as a foreign language. The Primer is mathematical and physical... prime numbers, ratios, atomic structures, Fraunhofer spectra, physical constants, etc.

Looking at the DNA in a drop of blood from person X they probably could determine who his or her ancestors were five hundred years removed and trace back their lineage to before the Deluge.

Look, I have it on good authority that there is Intelligent life in the Galaxy, however, we are not it.

At present, I am sure that those advanced races are observing our race, and have quite probably began broadcasting it as some sort of sitcom or reality series, "Watch as these humans prove once and for all they aint got a clue."

I would go so far as to say there is probably some intersteller gambling book with a pool on just what minute, hour, day, year and century we exterminate ourselves.

Now if I could just find out who to contact to make some bets on that for myself, and possibly immigrate to a nice world that is primarily tropical, nice beaches, no rap music, and above all, none of my exwives!
