Well, some people do contest that interpretation of events - yes.

Hmm contraditing articles posted the same day.

Salon article you posted says that oil supply vs demand is at a 200,000 barrl a day shortage

http://www.salon.com/tech/htww/2008/06/10/the_price_of_oil/index.html

"The bottom line is this: Although demand for oil is declining in the U.S. and Europe, overall global demand is still rising, fueled primarily by China and India. Overall demand growth has slowed, to be sure, but still totals 86.8 million barrels per day. And that's 200,000 barrels a day greater than current supply"

And then OPEC Says there is no shortage in this article.

Weighing the believability quotient for OPEC Vs IEA Hmmmm I think I'll go with the IEA numbers.

I said it was worth reading. I didn't say I agreed with it. In actuality, my opinion is that the essay referenced was sort of taking a middle road and refusing to state a strong opinion either way.

My overall personal view is that there is no point in further trashing the economy over oil prices that are in the main being manipulated by greedy factions. They've had their payday, now it's time for regulation and possibly nationalization.

But you know that already...

Archer -> RE: OPEC Seeks Buyers! (6/11/2008 1:34:00 PM)

You didn't say you agreed with the OPEC guy either.
You posted both articles I mearly was pointing out that there was a conflict of information between the two.
OPEC says there is no shortage, IEA says there is a shortage. I am saying flat out I will believe IEA over OPEC.
Either way you're on a closer track to the responsible parties for high oil prices than those blaming exxon mobil or shell.

So you're saying the Salon article was actually close to journalisticly neutral when compared to the Huffington one? That's not difficult. LOL Just a fun poke poke there.

I think we are both old enough to have seen this kind of shit before. I remember long lines, buying gas only on certain days, etc. It's all bullshit - legalized extortion.

As I've said before, it's too important to national security to leave it in the hands of private interests. It either has to be taken over or more heavily regulated.

I feel the same way about food and several other things. I do not have that much faith in the "global" market and I have heavy isolationist leanings. To me the idea of "act local, think global" means simply this: ordered units have to be small enough to control, many such units can have a broader impact. I don't think we can or should even try to control what someone in another part of the world is doing. We can however effect change locally and that's where our focus should be.

What that means is that we do need to look at controlling corporations doing business within our borders. We can additionally seek to heavily regulating speculator markets under our jurisdiction.

OPEC is somewhat beyond our reach. But I will say this: that video is a strong statement against peak oil scare-mongering. If OPEC wanted to bolster prices on the basis of oil scarcity - well, they just put the lie to any such strategy.
