i am a novice in many ways.  i have seen refernces to obedience training.  i have heard of it being used to train animals such as dogs, although i am not familiar with specific methods/tactics used.  My question is what are typical methods/tactics used in obedience training in a BDSM or Ds environment?

Thank you.

punishment and reward, same as anything
the individual items/punishments/rewards are varied based off of the people involved

If you're really talking straight up command/behavioral response training, then practice practice practice, immediate reward/punishment, practice practice practice.

Humans also tend to do well with understanding motivations and purposes for behavior, but it's not necessary for strict behavioral training.

How about a rolled up newspaper??

for me my Sir told me what he wanted, and if i deviated from what he wanted, i got punished - usually by being stood in the corner and told not to move.  The longest year of my life was spent during a half an hour against the wall. .   And the scolding  was worse than that. I hate the idea that he was disappointed in me.  Made me cry like a lovesick teenager (way worse than a baby!).

Show them the value of getting with the program.

No value, no motivation to succeed.

Jeezuz people, this is not rocket science.

give them a reason for desiring to obey; that should just about do it.

Typical methods would be pointless, worthless and generally counter productive.

Me, I just use love and deep genuine acceptance, the rest just seems to happen

I may be odd but I have a much narrrower definition of "obedience training" than seems to be going through this thread.
For me the narrow definition would be akin to the possitional training that one gets in the military adapted to personal preference.
So drill and ceremony kinkified. You see references to it in porn and in the various formats out there for protocol.
Gorean possitional training would be "obedience training", as would any other such training where the goal is the same or similar.

My biggest weakness is my disobedience.  Most likely because there is no negatives to it.  No punishments.  I could definitely see punishments working for me.  Moreso than positive reinforcement.

first off all  I think You will have to starve  him (mentally and sexuality), make him appreciate the value of things he had before, so he will look at them like a prize and will understand he has to work hard for them.
Work hard on the mental aspects, like things he has to do daily (like send You a massages, write a dairy, wear a kind of collar, etc ) and make him understand that when You are satisfy he will get a reward, so he will have to learn how to make You satisfy .
Everyone and he's way, I learn that chastity is a great way to stay focus and improve my submission, games of tease and denial make it ever more effective

Obedience first, obedience last. Giving a sub a set of guidelines within which they can live and interact is a great start. I call them protocols. These are the behaviors I like, these are the phrases I expect to hear, this is how I expect to be addressed or answered and these are their responses. This is how to act in this or that situation. Then make them study them, learn them and adopt them as their own. There should be instant punishment for disobedience. Depending on the mood I am, I may punish for causing me to waste time punishing them.

Reinforcement and acceptance of obedience in public is also beneficial. I never ask for coffee or a drink. I tell a girl to get me a drink. So among friends and their wives it is known that she serves. I’ve had a girl work for me in my company and commanded her in front of people. At a mall I will examine her posture and make it publicly obvious. Then tell her how to stand in front of people. I will have her dress and display clothes in the store and I decide what I will buy. She will hold up clothes and say things like “How about this one Master?” I will make her beg in public for the outfit she wants, calling me master, and sometimes say no. Sales people’s reactions are sometimes quite surprising-both ways. One older sales lady corrected my girl. “He said no. He means no.” then she smiled at me-beaming! One young girl offered her a number for counseling.

All of this is meant to reinforce to her on a continuing basis that her obedience is expected, accepted, and her way of life without question. Everyone is different. Some like constant whipping, beating, face-slapping and such. I couldn’t be bothered with always having to beat someone. I like mental discipline and a peaceful house and not continual contention.
So, everyone is different and will offer different advice. Nothing is funnier than seeing the levels of acceptance or even intolerance among people in alternate lifestyles.
Read, experiment, and make your own world.

PERFECT!  *smiles*  short, sweet, and to the point.   Also likely to confuse an awful lot of people since the implication is that the Dom actually, you know, delivers something of value to the sub and might be called upon to articulate what that is.  Isn't this right about where the reasoning that goes, "You should serve me because of all the wonderful things that will do to MY life..." falls apart?
