I ordered a slender, light-weight rattan cane recently.  Unfortunately, it appears to have gotten slightly warped during shipping.  It didn't come with care instructions, so I've searched the Internet for proper treatment but the instructions vary widely from site to site.  I'm confused!

I've also tried searching the Collarchat archives but haven't found what I need.  The cane doesn't appear to have been treated with any sort of varnish and has a leather handle.  I don't want to damage my new toy before I even get to play with it.  So, what's the easiest, least likely to damage method for straightening a new cane?

I ordered a fricking 150$ set of rattan canes. The little instruction book says to soak them in water every once in a while, the water is drawn up into the cane and keeps it flexible. I'd try tossing it in a tub of hot water to soak for a bit, and then letting it dry straight. It also says something about soaking them in linseed oil if I wanted them to become more dense.

Canes are not normally perfectly straight in the first place.  The best thing for them is to keep them most so the wood does not dry out and become brittle.  Leave them in the bathroom while showering, etc since it has a leather handle.  For ones without that I just hike them in the tub for a bit or in a vase.  If you are set on making it straight you could soak it for a few days until it's soft then, place it in between two pieces of wood that are routed out to fit.

One of the websites I checked said to soak it in cold water before hanging it and letting it air dry and another said to steam it before pressing it between boards.  Does it matter which method I use?  I'm not wedded to the idea of a perfectly straight cane, but this one is warped enough that I'd like it to be a little bit straighter.  It looks like it melted.  [&:]

Some quotes I found on the web about straightening rattan.

quote:

Steam bending is a basic technique for wood forming.  One method
for steaming wood that could be readily adapted to rattan would be
pouring boiling water over staves which are heavyily rapped in cloth.
This technique has the advantage of selectively heating portions of
the stave.

A rule of thumb for steaming wood for bending is to steam the wood
at 212F for 20 per half inch of thickness; but I am not so sure
how well this rule applies to low density and porous rattan.

the problem is a bent piece of rattan needs to be straight

lashing it to a piece of angle iron and soaking it will and will not work
it will remove some of the bend but the rattan will most likely spring back
some.

what i would try is to over straighten the piece and use very hot water
or steam.

here is the first of two methods i would recommend

the peice is now like this

     \________/

attach it to something that won't bend (4x4, angle iron, be creative) with
clamps or maybe screws. V-blocks would be helpful or carve flat spots on the
ends               |
                 /
                /
        clamp>__/
           ----------------------------

now soak in HOT water or live steam (you might have this at work) and bend
the peice down and place a spacer in between the peice and the straight
edge so that the rattan has a bow the oppiside way. be careful not to
twist the rattan.
             ___________
   clamp> __/     O     \___ <clamp
        ------------------
now let this set over night and is should (read cross fingers and pray) be
straight.

                 OR the simpler way

find an old tree with a v of two branches put on as heavy pair of gloves
warm the rattan by either soaking it or pouring hot water over it  place it
between the branches and tweek it srtaight. this is how ive normally seen
it done.

either method the heat is very important without the heat the rattan will
want to bend back to its original shape
another trick is in your water add faboric softener this helps when bending
wood but may not be wanted in rattan since it will make it more flexible
perminantly.

If I remember correctly, the  reccomended way to moisten the rattan was that you put rattan in a tight tube with an enclosed bottom and  add some water to the tube and let it set in approx and inch or two of water overnight to moisten the rattan. Then seal the ends with varnish to keep the moisture in. The tight tube will keep the rattan from warping.
