....i'm considering a trip to Dallas, Texas this time next year. i stopped at the fine airport there one time but that's all i know about the place......what do posters here think i ought to know about the town before i travel? And are there any posters here who fancy a cup of coffee with me some time next year?

What you need to know will depend on your travel plans, I suppose. Is it business or pleasure?

philosophy -> RE: Dallas, Texas (6/12/2008 12:29:03 PM)

....oh not business......Quakecon 09 to be specific.....lol

Smith117 -> RE: Dallas, Texas (6/12/2008 12:32:00 PM)

Where is that being held?

I was going to take issue with this until I remembered the local news had a segment where that american idol chode played a ukelele while singing. Damn him.

I believe that movie was filmed in Georgia, not Texas.

Back on point, I checked the website for the con, I know where the hotel is. You're about hmmmm just a block or so northwest of some decent areas. The Oaklawn area is pretty nice, lots of good restaurants. To go beyond there, you need a car or an escort. Bad areas abound once you leave that little 'oasis.' Oaklawn is also the primary hang-out/living area of the gay population, so if you have issue with that, you might wanna stay in the hotel. There are lots of nice restaurants and such nearby though. Although, judging by the look of the hotel, and the fact that it's a giant LAN party you're going to, I'd say the surrounding area doesn't really matter. It's Dallas in the summertime. Stay inside and game.

..my sincere thanks for your efforts. [:)] Mind you, nosy bugger that i am, i will certainly try to get out into the sunshine at least for half a day or so.......can't stand the thought of going to a new city and not having at least a little look about.......had enough of that when i was touring....heh......

Really nice hotel, close to a lot of great restaurants and such. And yeah...it'll be stupid hot that time of the year.

You may want a car if you're going to venture very far, maybe one for a day or something. FYI - it'll be an expensive cab ride from DFW Airport over to that hotel - think $50-$60. You may want to check out a shuttle or other transportation.

Dealy Plaza and the JFK Museum are downtown, maybe a 5 minute ride. If you're at all into history, it's worth the stop. If you like views, you can fork over the $$ for a trip up Reunion Tower. The rest of downtown is pretty much no mans land after 5pm. Although Campisi's is worth trekking into downtown for pizza.

The Nasher Museum is a really fantastic art museum. There's also the Dallas World Aquarium that's downtown. That same area has a House of Blues, Dick's Last Resort, and Hooter's for entertainment. There are a lot of restaurants in that general area within a small radius.

There are other things to see, that take a little drive. It just depends on what you're interested in. Fair Park has a really neat railroad museum (though that will be moving at some point). The Mustangs of Las Colinas are a beautiful sculpture and worth a peek.

Pretty much anything you want to do is in the area. And yes, you do have to be careful where you venture - it turns from nice, safe area to ghetto quickly.

Go to San Antonio instead.  Their Riverwalk is one of the coolest places I've ever been to.  You've got the Alamo for your history fix, a big artisan's market, and a Sea World.  Nice airport, too.

The one seemingly referenced to by the banjo and "purdy face" comments. "Deliverance."
