Thanks to the paddle wood thread, now I'm all wanting a paddle. Unfortunately, I have ZERO time for making one, and not much cash to spend on getting one. (I barely have time to USE one. *sigh* Ah, parenthood.)
Anyway, I'm particularly interested in cherry and purple heart wood, I think...rosewood or teak might be nice too. Best, least expensive sources for same, please? Thank you.

Well...it won't help you in your search for a purty wooden one, but the only paddle I have I "made" from one of those white, hard plastic cutting boards with a handle. The "made" part means that I drilled about 40 holes in it. The cutting board was like $3 originally and the drilling took 5 minutes. And the best part of it all is that it's dishwasher-safe!

Jenny > EBAY , estate sales , thrift stores , if you want the cheap decent paddle .When your wanting a particular shape size and wood is where is goes up in prices . type jokari paddle  , fun , great shape, almost unbreakable ,  and cheap .

Define "not much cash".  If you want purple heart its not gonna be cheap if its nice.  I once made a bloodwood paddle for a friend for 25 bucks, but then again I do overly nice things for my friends.

You got any buddies who are woodticks? or cabinetmakers?  know any shipyards? anybody restoring a boat?

They still use teak in boats, decks, cabinets, all kinda shit, if it is looks you are looking for, you can get soffit in teak, cut it and glue it and get a chunk of veneer for the edges.  But if you got a buddy thats a woodtick, ask him if he has a piece of five quarter teak left over from building a deck, or go to a boat repair place and ask them if they got a chunk of teak scrap laying around....hell they'll prolly give you a 2-3 foot chunk, or see what the shortest five quarter (typical deck plank) they sell at home depot.

Not much cash = I'd prefer to keep it closer to 20 than 40. I'm fine with "you can't get decent X for less than X'...that's also why I listed a few different woods. :)

The slaveboy and I both love wood and woodworking, but we have zero time right now. (Toddler and one on the way eat up what time we do have.)

Not going to get any "exotic" hardwood paddles of good quality for that price.  Unless you know someone.  At woodworking stores a piece of wood suitable for a paddle that is purple heart, bloodwood or cocobollo will run you 12-16 bucks.

A nice american hardwood might fill your bill, something like a poplar, black walnut, cherry or maple or even hickory.  At least until you can afford an exotic.

There is nothing inherently "better" about exotic woods, they are only called that because they are not native.  SOME are denser but there are dense American hardwoods as well.

Eastern Black Walnut is what is most common and is plenty dense and can be quite pretty.
Poplar is strong but rather light and soft for a good paddle
Cherry and maple make great paddles and if you use maple with one of the three common fancy figures it can be stunning and cherry, especially curly cherry can be stunning.
Hicory/Pecan is a great wood for paddles and is tough as nails, it is what is used to make hammer handles

Doing gunstocks I end up with a lot of scrap from English walnut as well as Claro walnut, stunningly beautiful woods and easily the match of any exotic for beauty.

As for getting "teak" scrap, those days are mostly gone, teak is getting really expensive and people save scraps for making plugs and such.

At first I thought the OP was looking for an exotic wood "blank" to make a paddle, but I realize now she's looking to buy.  Still, I wanted to note that the dust of many "exotic" woods is dangerous to breathe.  Cocobolo and purpleheart, two commonly found exotics, are especially dangerous, but in fact if you work with many exotics (and a few native) woods, you need to wear a properly rated respirator and make sure the dust isn't inhaled by others in your household.  Especially children.

I sent you am email address to a guy who I have bought paddles from on ebay  exoticwoodpaddles

They are great paddles and the price can't be beat.  He does not sell them often on ebay but when he does you can get a great bargin

I was just looking on ebay and exoticwoodpaddles has a maple and walnut paddle listed.

I know it's not the wood you are looking for but you can see one of his paddles.  It's listed for auction starting at 99 cents
