ORIGINAL: kdsub I know this sounds revolutionary but...instead of setting up checkpoints...why not get those police officers out of their cars and on a walking beat in the neighborhood? Who knows if people can talk to them...or get to know them...maybe crime would decrease. Sounds a little too "Mayberry-ish" for DC in this day/age. People don't respect cops anymore than they do the average Joe. Cops get shot sitting in their cruisers, helping in a domestic situation etc. **Eta, walking the beat will just make them an open target** I think you are wrong there...at least I hope you are wrong... you have to stop the... we they… thing. Cops in armor driving down the street in bulletproof cars do little to earn the trust of the citizen on the street. I’ll bet there are plenty of good folks willing to become police and walk their neighborhoods…There just has to be the will to do it. Of course there a "plenty of good folks" but there are "plenty of bad folks" too, I'm betting more bad than good, but I could again, be wrong. I'm just saying for NOW, this is the best route to go. Hell, if I were a criminal, I'd think twice about going to those neighborhoods now. And once the criminals relocate, I'm sure the checkpoints will also.
