It's got to be said that 'marital' instead of 'martial' is an unfortunate typo [:D] .
Some of us made the leap and the assumption

I know this sounds revolutionary but...instead of setting up checkpoints...why not get those police officers out of their cars and on a walking beat in the neighborhood?  Who knows if people can talk to them...or get to know them...maybe crime would decrease.

Sounds a little too "Mayberry-ish" for DC in this day/age.
People don't respect cops anymore than they do the average Joe.
Cops get shot sitting in their cruisers, helping in a domestic situation etc.

**Eta, walking the beat will just make them an open target**

Checkpoints such as these have been challenged in court before. They are legal and used in many other areas of the Country, usually as a means to get grunk drivers off of our highways..
And if that was what they were being used for they would be legal.Thee are being used to determine whether or not you have a "good" reason for being in the area and as such are patenly illegal...Whether or not a suit has been filed...being unopposed does not make it any less legal

Actually they do.. you might want to read up on Cathy Lanier -- our police chief and many of the things she's done to improve
policing in DC ... including police officers walking a beat.. all over... she's made great strides...

this is, by the way, one neighborhood check point.. not plural all over the city

Hi Madame4a

If she can afford to man a checkpoint then she can afford to put more police on the beat…She may be a good police officer but I think she is wrong in this action.

If I had to go through a checkpoint to get to my home I would feel I’m living in a prison. I would sure be pissed knowing the rich folks in the subs were not having to show id just to get home or buy the bacon.

They have been used in this manner in other cities for years.  I remember going through one when I was in the navy.  The cops asked my purpose for going into the neighborhood.  When I told them I was going in "to get laid" they handed back my license and let me go on about my business.

False alarm.
I just read the headline. "Marital" instead of "Martial."
Why does this "surprise" anyone?
The citizens of the District of Columbia have been denied their Second Amendment Rights for years now!
Where's the "uproar" over that?
The silence is deafining.
Just restore their Second Amendment Rights and watch crime Plummet in D.C. within one month!
Gee, where's the U.S. SUPREME COURT when we fucking NEED them?
They don't give a shit do they?
They all have armed security. Fuck The People, right?

I think you are wrong there...at least I hope you are wrong... you have to stop the... we they… thing. Cops in armor driving down the street in bulletproof cars do little to earn the trust of the citizen on the street.
I’ll bet there are plenty of good folks willing to become police and walk their neighborhoods…There just has to be the will to do it.

Desperate time call for desperate measures. DC is known as "Dodge the bullets City". People need the extra protection and since witnesses after the crime has been committed are few/far between, the powers that be have to resort to this. So what EVERYONE's presence is questioned? I'd rather have that than noone's presence is questioned and the drug selling continues, innocent kids/adults are shot just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes they're in front of their own damn window!!
I'm guessing those opposed to this are also opposed to taking off their shoes at the airport?  You can scream "Constitutional violation" all you want, but the C was written in 1787 (albeit ammended 27 times), but these same folks who are screaming about the violation are probably the same ones who say, "Someone should do something"!  Well, someone is doing something.

The crime rate in the "rich folks" neighborhood is not running rampant like it is in DC. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's non existent, it's just a whole different atmosphere. I hardly EVER hear about crime2 miles to the North of me but to the South, Good Grief! That's the MS-13 territory. Damn Skippy I wouldn't mind being detained going home if it meant my safety!

Of course there a "plenty of good folks" but there are "plenty of bad folks" too, I'm betting more bad than good, but I could again, be wrong. I'm just saying for NOW, this is the best route to go. Hell, if I were a criminal, I'd think twice about going to those neighborhoods now. And once the criminals relocate, I'm sure the checkpoints will also.

Parttimehottie, there has been a "Constitutional Violation" going on in D.C. for many years now!
And the "powers that be" are not supposed to be "the govt." but The People!

I'm just wondering how will checking ID's stop random killings?

Butch

The idea of the checkpoints is that it will keep out people who don't belong in the neighborhood.  The police will be stopping people, checking identification, and asking people's reason for being there.  If they don't have one, or can't confirm it, they are turned away.

To the OP:
It was suspended today, by the way.  You can check out the article at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/12/AR2008061200778.html.

It certainly would not have hurt to do some cursory research on the subject.

Might be so but this is a piss poor way of going about it...I'm with the previous poster get the cops walking a beat...You can't look in someone's eyes or no the neighborhood from inside a cruiser

popeye1250 -> RE: Marital Law 'Unofficially' Declared in DC (6/13/2008 1:05:04 PM)

What if they had big signs on the borders of the city; "You may not excercise your First Amendment Rights while in the boundries of Washington D.C.?"
How long do you think those signs would last?
But, they have no problem depriving people of their Second Amendment Rights?
Any government that's "afraid" of The People having guns should be "afraid!"

slavejale -> RE: Marital Law 'Unofficially' Declared in DC (6/13/2008 1:08:29 PM)

Greetings

okay i have not read the WHOLE thread but the OP...i must say, that i do agree with what they are doing. Living in DC, you will see that the crime rate has SOARED tremendously especially in neighborhoods such as Trinadad, down in the lower part of SW (the ghetto/projects in laymens terms). In SE as well.

Granted, it might be "extreme" to some people, here in DC it is needed. Also granted, it might cause more traffic backups etc. etc. i really do believe that it is needed. SOMETHING, is needed. Now if they start only doing "white people" or "black people" (i.e. racial profiling) THEN i will "complain".

But really, i am glad that they are AT LEAST doing something about it...Eventually they will pan it out, but as of right now im glad.

well wishes

Madame4a -> RE: Marital Law 'Unofficially' Declared in DC (6/13/2008 2:08:22 PM)

ONE MORE TIME... they do community area policing.. or block policing.. or whatever you want to call it.. clearly its not working in the Trinidad area of DC...

live here... you'll probably end up agreeing with the actions.. easily

as someone else said... do a little research

philosophy -> RE: Marital Law 'Unofficially' Declared in DC (6/13/2008 2:14:07 PM)

...sorry, i know it's a serious thread......but marital law unofficially declared? [:D]

Read one of those typo things a while back, apparently from a newspaper.....it went roughly like this.....

"And then the chinese state circus went through a series of difficult maneuvers of the marital arts"

ownedgirlie -> RE: Marital Law 'Unofficially' Declared in DC (6/13/2008 2:24:31 PM)

Whether you agree with this practice or not, it is not martial law.  It is not marital law, either.  :)

Its a lot more than "a killing"  ... its a consistent pattern of murders....

Yeah but if the murderer/s live/s in the area, they'll have a legitimate reason for being there, thus the checkpoints would be unable to stop the pattern.
