I've been hearing that two of the big three US automakers are going to curtail the production of trucks and SUVs.

Trucks are a necessity for some, therefore the following business rules apply :

1. A decrease in demand warrants a price increase.
2. An increase in demand warrants a price increase.

So you might want to park those SUVs and pickup trucks, but it would probably be a good idea to hang on to them. Get some little shitcan to put all the miles on. Somebody out there is going to need a truck.

If the cost of the new replacement goes up significantly, so does the value of used ones, no matter what NADA or Kelly blue book says. And the problem with selling it is, what happens when you need one ?

Someone I know who sells for Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge says they can't give their trucks away, that the prices have dropped considerably.  The reason you want to hang onto your truck is you can't get anything for it as a trade-in.

It appears some industry pundits are prediting that mid-sized SUVs will soon become extinct.

The article discusses the 'ripple effect' the demise of this class of vehicle may have.  Among them is a forecasted rise in the repo rate.

I will give up my Eddie Bauer Explorer when they pry the keys from my dead fingers! I dont care if gas prices go to $10 a gallon I love my SUV. Sports cars are great - but Its kind of tough to tow a boat, and to carry a couple of coolers, a barbecue grill, a keg, fishing poles, lawn chairs, an umbrella, two sets of scuba gear and six scuba tanks in the back of the Vette or BMW. This is all marketing crap like we had in the 70's. Everyone got rid of the big comfortable cars over gas concerns, then they bought these little 4 cylinder shitboxes, then once they got tired of them and decided comfort and safety mattered everyone got an SUV or MiniVan, now they are getting us to go back to the rollerskates with seats, after which everyone will become disgusted and buy SUV's again... Yeah sure, my explorer drinks gas - but so what - I dont care if it costs me $40 to drive to Galveston instead of $32... The extra $8 is well worth it based on comfort, legroom , style, space etc... People dont realize that the difference isnt that big...

If an SUV gets 12.5mpg and a car gets 25 on a 50 mile trip we are talking about roughly 2 gallons - $8. To me it is worth the extra cash... I see it as the difference between being in Vegas and  a) hopping a public transit bus  b) taking a taxi or c) taking a limo.

Don't get your panties in a wad just yet .... there are a lot of  hybrid vehicles that are going to be released in the latter half of 2009  including large SUV's and pickups the 2010 models they just happened to be a bit late for consumers due to current gas increases which sank current sales .... fuel economy  never became a priority ...now suddenly it is and they are caught with their panties around their ankles  with very few small vehicles in their line up....the reason ...small cars have a smaller profit margin than the larger vehicles ..so they swamped the market with larger less fuel efficient vehicles... with the sudden big jumps in gas prices they  got caught in trouble as the curent productions lines in their plants are outfited with equipment and carriers designed to produce larger and wider vehicles and inorder to produce small cars these plants have to be gutted and redesigned to handle  the production of  the smaller vehicles inorder to do that they have to shut down lines  so they had to chose the plants/lines that are producing the lowest sellers and because the engineering for new small vehicles wasn't in place already (normally takes 9 years from concept to production) the companies will have to look to europe  to see what existing vehicles they can use as bases for new american cars inorder to speed up the process and be able to use existing tool and dieing for  inorder to minimize turn around times....and they will pay for that lack on insight as many foreign companies will be bringing cars into the US market when needed most  for before the US makers are ready for example miranda http://www.gv-usa.com/vehicle-info.php

cars are fine..but only fit 4 ...MAYBE 5 people comfortably...so if you have 3 kids....one kid cant go!  not to mention the lack of space for luggage of a family of 5 in a car.  sure some cars have it...but then they lack the people space.

thats why suv's are good.  my parents have had one for atleast 10 years now.  they started with cherokee...and now evolved to volvo.  they look like a crushed van.

And the Saudis yesterday agreed to increase their output by 5%!
Do you think we'll see a big decrease at the pump like we see a big increase for "bad" news?
Thing is a lot of stocks are owned by people in the M.E. and they don't want to see the market go down either as it could cost them billions!

Next to the Youtube video where Bernie Sanders destroys Greenspan - This is the second best Youtube video clip I've ever seen. This is some truly brilliant stuff.

If you pay very close attention to what Greenburger is testifying to, you begin to understand that the ''Peak Oil'' / ''supply and demand'' argument that is constantly parroted---here and elsewhere---, is a complete ruse.

i need my suv.  with 4 growing boys, cub and myself, a car just isn't going to cut it.  since i've become disabled, my chrysler pacifica that was big enough to hold all of us is no longer big enough to hold all of us plus my wheelchair or scooter.  we don't have a choice in the matter, it's going to be an suv or minivan for us for a long time to come, especially since my oldest will never leave home due to his own handicaps.  i'll give up my suv when they can make a honda prius big enough to carry my crew and my gear safely and comfortably.
