Having some neck damage myself, I understand your desire for such a piece.
I have oft said I'd sooner wear a posture collar out in public than a cervical collar (and I would). Lots of folks have already weighed in on this and I'm going to go along with the gentleman who spoke of the metal collars he makes. I tossed around the idea of a modified gorget with a metal smith at a Ren Faire this past season and I think that it would work out very well.
I understand your desire for something well-made; the discomforts of the injury are plenty without being stabbed or without wearing something that looks nice.
Additionally, for me, just wearing a particularly thick collar can make me more mindful of my head and neck positioning and that may be assistance to you as well.
