I'm curious, for those of you who have experience with practice, can you elaborate on what in entails?

I've heard people talk about petitioning their master or a prospective master but other than writing a heartfelt letter about why they should be accepted into service, I really can't find much information or details. Maybe that is actually all there is to it?

Yes, I've tried searching through the forum archives and haven't had much luck but if anyone knows of an old thread that would be helpful, I'm happy to read it. And yes, I've also tried googling.

Well IMO everyone has to say yes in the end, so who asks and how is just a matter of personal preference.

However, I do require them to say "Yes I want this" before we move forward. This can be as simple as them emailing and saying "Yes I've decided I want this relationship" or my asking them "So this is what I am offering to you, is this what you feel will work for you and what you want for yourself?" and them saying yes in return.

what does it Entail?

A request... the manner in which that request should be made is directly dependent on the personal preferences of the people involved. How others wish to do it.. Is Irrelevant!

I would suggest...

If one is a submissive.... inquire to the preferences of the prospective Dominant. and ask to share your own personal thoughts on the subject as well.

If one is a Dominant.... share the given preferences to the prospective submissive but also ask the submissive for their thoughts on the subject as well.

Most likely the submissive will be looking for guidence from the Dominant on how they would like to be petitioned.

i'm not a slave; i'm a submissive. Like You, i have heard of the use of 'slavery petitions' -- i have also heard of the use of 'contracts' between a D and an s.

The idea of a pre-negotiated 'contract' about the parameters of O/our relationship just seems just plain silly to me. But hey, if it helps S/some P/pl, more power to T/them.

Same with 'slave petitions'.

Thanks for the responses thus far. I'll definitely check out the links both internal to CM and external.

I guess the point of this question is that I'm trying to de-mystify for myself this tradition I've heard of, of petitioning for service. I like the idea of the submissive making a case for him/herself as to why he/she should be accepted in to service. What can I say but that it appeals to me? I know there's truly no right or wrong way to go about things, but I also know there are ways that some have followed because it was done that way before and I am a stickler for things of tradition. I know several people who frequent the forums who might know what I'm interested in learning and maybe I should just email them privately but if I did I might lose out on other's input that could be just as valuable.
