Anyone relate to this story?  Has the acceptance of mixed race and mixed religious couples changed in your family over the years?

"WITNESS: My mixed-race family"
Fri Jun 13, 2008 4:26pm EDT
By Diane Bartz

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When my father was growing up in a Minnesota farm town during the Depression, his German Lutheran mother vehemently opposed mixed marriages. For her, that included her son marrying someone of Norwegian descent. Or a Catholic.

Now, my father, who is white, has two white grandchildren, two who have a black father and two adopted from Asia.

To me, the fact that Armin Bartz adores his white, light brown and dark brown grandchildren is testament to how much America has changed in the past 70 years."

if this trend continues the idiocy of 'white supremacy' will die out in another 100 years.

And my brother married a Sicilian.

Things haven't changed in my familiy for at least the past couple generations. Several of my cousins are mixed race, and a couple are essentially "black" (they're adopted, and I'm unsure of their precise racial heritage).

The way I see it, the real progress will be made when articles like this are greeted with "So?"

Sadly, my grandparents are vehemently against the idea. I once dated a guy who looked Hispanic.. (Long silky black hair, dark skin... *purr*)  When my grandma found out, she was offended, wouldn't stop making snarky little  racist comments, and even pulled me aside to tell me there was no way she was making "tor- tillahs" for Thanksgiving.

On the other hand, my parents are completely different, and couldn't care less about the color of the guys that I date... they just want him to be a "Nice boy"

I think things are slowly getting better... but I've given up trying to change the mind of racist old people- I guess if I'd had the same strong opinion for 70 years, it'd be hard to get me to change my mind too.

i was married to a Mexican and have two beautiful bi-racial daughters.

my family history has been racially mixed for generations - Black/Native American to Black/Irish/British/French on both sides.

most of my relatives are in mixed marriages.

Being a person of mixed race, i can say there are pros and cons.  But at least i can safely say, i don't think any one race is superior to any other, and know from whence i speak.

Good question.  My answer is yes.  Being from the south I grew up in a racially controlled home.  One word I heard continuously was the racial slur we know what I am referring to.
When I was 24, I was engaged to an African American male, the love of my life.  My grandmother threatened to disown me if I married him.  I should have now that I look back at it.
Now my mother woud accept a mixed child with no problem.   The ones in my family who practice prejuidce would not say anything.  Back then, my grandfather threatened to kill me literally if I ever married a Black Male.
What did all that hate do to me?  It gave me a fetish for the Black American Male.   I think they are the most marveous looking creatures that God ever made.
My family hates Mexicans now instead of African Americans.  That makes me sick ask well.

I’m German and English. I have five nieces two of whom are German, English, Irish, and Italian. I now have a grand nephew who is German, English, Irish, Italian, and African-America and I have a grand niece who is German, English, Irish, Italian, African-American, Native American and Chinese. I was a little nervous about how my father (who is divorced from my mother and lives in Florida) would react to the introduction of African-American and Asian blood into the family. His parents, while not of the rabid Klan variety of racists were of the "the Negros have their side of town and we have our side of town," variety. I had heard him make mildly racist comments before (he was never to happy about the Italian blood entering the family, via my sister’s husband, but thought he could live with the Irish part because the Irish were beer drinkers and so couldn’t be all bad). I shouldn’t have been worried. He took one look at those two beautiful babies and feel instantly in love – just like the rest of us.

Hey...I'm a North Jersey Sicilian originally from Bayside, Queens.  I have no idea what you're talking about, but a few of my cousins will be visiting you in a few days.  8)

LOL Aileen

My family is 'color-blind'.  I have never heard any racist comments from any of them, nor have I ever seen any behavior that would indicate racism.  When I was a kid my mom was dating a guy who was african american.. my cousin is married to an african american - they have 8 beautiful children. I've dated non-white men.
I know that society attitudes, in general, are changing, but I agree with mefisto.. we still have a ways to go.

From this thread, I take it that 'mixed-race' also means 'mixed-nationalities'. Which means that close to 95% or whatever of the population of the US is mixed-race.

my family sort of cares as they're part of the old generation...they'll care initially but eventualy focus on the person and who he is how he treats me etc ...i was friends with lots of different races when i was really young while my dad was still in the military moved around like 4 or 5 times before i was 6 years old. so i don't focus on race and don't care for anyone that does.

The only ones who are a true American are the native Americans.  They were here first, and we came later.

Was there a point to this? Is it impossible for you to discuss anything without bringing up the native americans? Do you get paid everytime you point this out in a post? What?
