Hello DesertRat,

Your words were well received in our household, and we appreciate that you took the time to respond in kind to luvdragon.

It's nice to hear that there are responsible pet owners out there. You do what's best for your pets, keeping them safe, etc Lucky for our silly little cat that he doesn't have to worry about real predators where we live, because if he did, his little butt would have no choice but to stay in the house, because as much as I am not a cat person, I don't want anything bad to happen to him. He didn't choose us as his owners, we chose him, and his care and safety is our responsibility.

I applaud you for your strong opinions on ownership of your pets, let's hope that more and more people feel the same way.

Your points are well-taken and really well expressed. I apologize for being such a prig. I live in a beautiful, idyllic place, but it's not safe to let cats out here due to coyotes, owls, hawks, juvenile delinquents, and other malicious humans. It seems you have really improved the lot of your kitty. Also, your environment might not be as risky as mine. I will still be a "totally indoor" kinda guy, kitty-wise, but will try REALLY hard to be more openminded. Failing that, I'll make an effort to butt out when appropriate.

Bob

Thank you and apology most gladly accepted.

You had a knee jerk reaction to my post, I'm guessing, because of irresponsible and despicable behavior of other pet owners you've witnessed. I can understand that.
Likewise, I had knee jerk response to your post, in that being called a bad pet owner - to me anyway - is like being called a bad parent. I hope you can understand that as well.

Now, seeing how well you care for your kitties, I can just imagine how you'd care for that lucky lady when she gets your collar [;)]

DesertRat -> RE: Stray kitty (11/4/2005 3:37:33 PM)

Anopheles and luvdragonx,

Thanks for your understanding words. I am glad the misunderstanding and potential for misgivings was cleared up. My feelings for the helpless little ones are so strong that I sometimes don my armor and wade into battle needlessly. There are lots of bad actors out there when it comes to treatment of animals, but sometimes I get carried away and see adversaries that aren't really there. Luckily for me, I usually rein myself in before making a total mess of things. I'm getting better at that, I think. Trying, anyway.

Also, apologies to RiotGirl for tainting the upbeat tone of this thread.

Bob

Hmm, interesting side note...

I wonder if how you care for your pets is a good indicating factor for a potential submissive under consideration as to how well they should expect to be cared for by their Master???

Food for thought.....

Bob,

We share those same strong feelings about animals. I have a strong, strong love for dogs, and as much as I would love to have that perfect German Shepherd Dog from the best breeder in the world, I would never buy that dog under any circumstance, when there are so many great pets that are needlessly euthanized everyday, largely due to irresponsible ownership. I choose to not be a party to the senseless breeding and killing of cats and dogs that happens constantly and consistently across the world. Give me a dumb old mutt looking for a chance any day.

Gee, i'm so happy i could bounce!!! (i kno i kno, i'm silly) You all are so awesome!!! i feel like i almost helped stop everyone from getting nasty. Sure you know what i mean, one person says one thing and then the WHOLE thread gets taken over by ppl yelling at each other. And you all didnt do it! You became understand, and accepting, and reasonable. thats so cool!

Far as the wee critters go. i also feel strongly about animals. ALL OF THEM. To me, they're in the same catagory as unmentionables. Innocent. Needing some one to look out for them. Take care of them. AND just as pure. i've always loved them to death. LOL first critter i ever saved was a guinea pig from my little sister. She kept the poor thing locked in the laundry room, day in and out, rarely if ever cleaning the cage. So i convinced (and prolly manipulated) my way into taking him home. <grins> he had the run of the backyard (with me supervising) he got along great with my dog, and unknown to my parents, he had the run of which ever room i was in. <wicked grin> i EVEN let him have the run of my stepfathers pool table just for chuckles.

ALL my animals are family, LOL and i even got a photo album of them. They (god forbid the non animal lovers hear me say it) but better, superior to humans. They're pure for one. innocent for two, i could go on. i save them all over the place. Got locked into a warehouse parking lot cos i saw two dogs running lose. LOL Low and behold they were "gaurd dogs" and heh, the police had to contact the owners to get me out of the parking lot. Strangest thing. Cats always seem to follow me home when i take walks at night.

Pure breeds? Personally, let the others have them. Mutts? Give them to me. My MO is taking strays home, building them up and finding them a good home. As for the fricken shelter, GOD i hated that place. i usually let in tears. stupid stupid stupid ppl. One dog i couldnt save = ( it was just too big to slip out the euthanasia room. ALL because stupid ME, brought their attention it had an open wound (missing the flesh) about the size of my hand spread on the dogs leg. i KNOW it was cos it was sitting in its own poop and i MADE the supervisor, the head guy, PROMISE me he wouldnt put it to sleep if i told him which dog. i just wanted the dog to get some help. Ya know? So they had the vet look at it and said it had this and this and that wrong with it and it had to be put down. They lied to me. Needless to say, it was ALL reported.

Euthnasia room = i dead dog on teh table, 3 dogs sitting around WAITING to be put to sleep. HOW cruel can you BE? <sigh> i get alittle excited when i think of that place. i eventually had to stop going as i usually let in tears and boiling with rage. It wasnt healthy and god forbid i got caught LOL.

One of the things, that few prolly would ever understand (but you all might) was stopping my car in the middle of a busy street, and picking up a stray dog that had been killed. Wrapping a blanket over it as well, and placing it on the grass. Just so that, even if its in death, the animal could of known some love in its life.

okay i'll stop going on about the animals. = )

As far as the indoor outdoor thing. i respect the fact you think i'm wrong. Cant always agree, eh?

DesertRat -> RE: Stray kitty (11/4/2005 7:34:26 PM)

You've all made me feel a lot better just knowing you're out there.

MadameDahlia -> RE: Stray kitty (11/4/2005 11:58:27 PM)

I brought home Gizmo and Tabitha at the same time (or rather my mom, my sister and I did).

They had a bit of trouble with the two kitties already present. Tabitha is still somewhat of an outsider, but she's less skittish.

Gizmo on the other hand is a social butterfly and the baby of the house. He picks on his uncle Houdini mercilessly - and he picks on his older, meaner, much larger uncle Shadow (who happens to be twenty-ish pounds of Russian Blue from what I can tell).

Despite the size of the two other cats they don't really ever tear into Gizmo. When he was a bit younger I fed Houdini well before introducing Houdini to Gizmo - after I had applied a bit of wet cat food to the back of Gizmo's neck.

Houdini (not hungry enough to nip Gizmo) began to wash him... and wash him... and washes him to this day. In fact everyone grooms Gizmo now.

As Houdini washed Gizmo he took on a fairly parental role with the little guy - and still curls up around him, one front leg stretched over Gizmo's shoulders.

They spoon! It's cute.

Shelters, especially municipal shelters are incredibly depressing places. The staff is usually well meaning, but the resources are stretched so thin that it could only be described in many of these as a concentration camp. The saddest part, particularly with dogs, is that the ones that initially arrive in "adoptable" shape, meaning that they don't have any overt and potentially dangerous aggressiveness, end up in a situation where any socialization that they have becomes lost, because they are lost in a sea on constantly barking dogs and humans that simply cannot give them the attention that they need to be well-rounded. So they end up taking on those characteristics that will make them "damaged goods" and not very attractive to a potential owner.

This sad situation happened to us once, we had an abused shelter dog that spent his formative months in a county animal shelter, and as much as we tried, he never got past the very aggressive and fearful behavior that he had picked up, and unfortunately, because of his size and temperament, he was a danger to our ourselves and to our young children, and we could not keep him.
