xxblushesxx -> Have you ever (or know someone who has) been an expert witness? (6/18/2008 10:46:51 AM)

I am looking for information from people who either have been expert witnesses or know someone who has.

I'd just like more information regarding marketing your services, etc...

Thanks!

hmmm, I have been an expert witness.

Not sure how I could help you market your skills, though.  It was a one time thing for me, in a divorce case, in which I testified as to the market value of an enterprise the husband owned.

I tried to keep it simple.  Used small words.  Explained easy concepts.

The questions both sides asked me had nothing to do with what I came to testify about.

Idiots.

I am an expert witness from time to time, on matters of aviation liability... (ie did the pilots act correctly, what were the other options etc...) What exactly are you trying to find out? I dont market myself as an expert witness, just get called because I am a consultant and have a fantastic resume - engineering degrees at both the baccalaurate and masters degree levels, Navy pilot, just about every pilot rating available, instructor in everything from Cessna 150's to 777's, flight engineer, airframe and powerplant mechanic, and aircraft dispatcher certificates etc.... The times I have been called, I didnt "market myself" I was just brought in by the lawyer as a consultant to render an opinion... Ie I was brought in to evaluate a few incident findings, and in once case to try to recreate the accident in a simulator so as to see if it could have been avoided...

I'm in the same boat as Firmhand, I've done it once, as an expert in my obscure corner of the field of software security. From what I remember from what the attorney said that there are companies out there that act as matchmakers between experts and attornies. I'm guessing google would turn some up.

sub4hire -> RE: Have you ever (or know someone who has) been an expert witness? (6/18/2008 11:58:42 AM)

I've been one but no idea how to market yourself as being one.
Sorry I'm of no help to you.

hejira92 -> RE: Have you ever (or know someone who has) been an expert witness? (6/18/2008 12:07:08 PM)

I was once. That, and the time I spent with the attorney before hand explaining the info to him was the easiest money I ever made. And at $250 an hour- I would have done it forever!

I lucked into it because an attorney friend found himself in a PI case and was not familiar with chiropractic orthopedic tests and needed to learn fast. I guess it depends on your area of expertize (sp?). I would contact local attorneys, present your credentials and your hourly rate and see what happens.

Yes, HoneyMaster has been an expert witness in the past and very much enjoyed it. His expertise is quite extensive and specialized. I told Him I would attempt to get information regarding how to market yourself in regards to this.

Thanks for all the help!

If anyone has anything to add, please feel free to join in!

There is an advertsing book that is used by attourneys starts with an M (could be Martindale Hubberd (sp)) you could market yourself through something like that.
Basicly you have to market yourself as a consultant would and target lawyers who deal in the area of law closely related to your area of expertise. Worked for a woman who was an expert witness on the subject of dry cleaner related polution.

There are also web pages specificly for advertising your expert witness services.

I have on occasion had to provide expert opinions (although so far not sworn testimony). The basic marketing strategy if you want to do this sort of thing is to shmooze plaintiff's lawyers. That and have the academic and other credentials necessary to establish professional expertise in a particular discipline.

Lawyers call the witnesses who will give the answers they like.

Word of mouth is invaluable.  Starting as an expert consultant is one way to work your way up to expert witness certification.

Since you say he is already certified as an expert witness, why doesn't he ask the attorneys who hired him and got his testimony admitted as expert, for referrals?
They should have a good idea as to which of their colleagues are taking cases that might require either expert witness or expert consultants, what experts they normally use, etc.

Any nearby universities would be a good place to cultivate contacts, since some people will call up that particular department when preparing a case, and if the faculty members know his credentials, they may refer him.

Another good networking arena may be professional associations...going to national conferences should be a good place for him to mention to others that he is available.

*lol* I don't think His university is getting many calls considering He is in charge of His department...

Yes, we've talked a bit about it; I've made some internet contacts today, and we are going to put something together to send out to attorneys who specialize in malpractice cases. (through the mail)

He speaks at the national conferences quite often.

You and he need to think carefully on this. "Expert witnesses" are paid to advance the case of either the plaintiff or the defendant in a trial. Often, it is perceived--with some justification--as advocacy masquerading as science.

Will his professional reputation and standing among his colleagues suffer because he is seeking out this sort of engagement?

xxblushesxx -> RE: Have you ever (or know someone who has) been an expert witness? (6/18/2008 1:49:01 PM)

It hasn't in the past. He won't testify to something He doesn't believe.

Irishknight -> RE: Have you ever (or know someone who has) been an expert witness? (6/18/2008 1:59:25 PM)

I want to advertise as a consultant on being a complete bastard.  Do you think there's a market?
