CCTV, ID CARDS AND 42 DAYS "PROTECT US"

Today's terrorists would only be beaten by 21st century solutions such as ID cards, Gordon Brown claimed yesterday.

Defending the scheme, along with 42 day detention, DNA registers and CCTV, he warned authorities could not afford to bury their heads in the sand.

"New technology is giving us modern means by which we can discharge these duties, but just as we need to employ these modern means to protect people from new threats, we must at the same time do more to guarantee our liberties," he said.

"Facing these modern challenges, it is our duty to write a new chapter in our country's story - one in which we both protect and promote our security and liberty, two equally proud traditions."

The prime minister was defending his security policies nearly a week after he scraped the 42-day law through the Commons. Security was "one of the greatest challenges in the modern world" he told a think tank, adding 2,000 terror suspects were being monitored in Britain. Mr Brown also pointed out terrorism was not the only problem society was facing.

"Organised crime has changed beyond recognition from the days of the Krays," he added.

"No longer confined to a neighbourhood or city but involving networks spanning the world - threatening lives and feeding conflict and instability."

The speech came days after David Davis stood down as Conservative MP to fight a by-election on civil liberties.

Meanwhile, Phil Booth of pressure group No2ID said Mr Brown's speech showed "he simply doesn't get it", and Liberty director Shami Chakrabarti added," The government doesn't want emergency powers, but a permanent state of emergency."

We need more speed humps/cameras in London and Yorkshire , especially Bradford
Being held for up 42 days if  suspected of wanting to kill civillians doesn't seem excessive to me.
DNA data bases also OK. Helps to catch criminals on miniscule evidence.
CCTV cams dont seem to work very well.

These are dangerous times. We gorra 'ave that Oil so we cant withdraw from the Middle East. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a hair shirted N/esser!
So our Islamic friends will just have to lump it OK.

Israel/Palestine: we need to knock some sense into the US and Israeli governments.
I do not know what the solution there is 'cos each side wants more than the other can give.

I see one of the Chakrabati sisters has got in the act. They would be better occupied making India/Pakistan a more tolerant place. They could take Trevor Phillips and all foreign current affairs / news readers as their toy boys

Of course it's going to be a help, but only if its added to all of the other measures being placed.

You're a suspected terrorist so now when you enter the country illegally the first place you will go is to get an ID card with biometric scan and a DNA sample. Now we know who the suspects are the next is to know where the are ... welcome to the wheelie bins with embedded chips, added to the DNA database we can scan your rubbish and know who is living in any given household at any time (and bill you for the wrong rubbish in the bins too).

What else would any suspected terrorist need, a driving license, great go take a test and buy a car. With the DVLC at Swansea having their database we know know what car, when it was last MOT'd and taxed and that its insured. With all of the speed cameras in use around the country we can follow the suspect from point to point with them and also drop a few speeding fines onto them. Our suspect has decided that leaving a bomb in a major city is their plan, but with the quality of the CCTV systems we can see them approach an area and act suspiciously and pre-empt their carnage by dispatching a couple of "Brown's bobbies" (sorry no full time police available they are doing the paperwork related to the speed cameras).

"Browns bobbies" turn up and proceed to arrest our suspect who quite willing co-operates and stands quietly while he is cautioned. The suspect is held for the maximum 42 days while all of the required checks are made and subsequently found not to be a terrorist but a 92 year old mother who has given a false address so her grandchildren can get into the local school and not the one half way across the city. Cue the "human rights" lawyers (being high profile maybe Cherie Blair herself will get involved) who now take her case, paid for out of the legal aid bucket. After many months of deliberation the three high court judges hearing the case hand down a verdict of unlawful imprisonment (by European Union definition) and our suspected terrorist is handed a lump sum and apologised to by the "jobsworths" who were just protecting the rest of us innocent (sheep). At the end of the case it turns out our suspect was being persecuted in her home town because she was white, English and had no criminal record .... the European courts award her an additional lump sum and stipulate she must now be rehoused and given a new identity because she has earned refugee status.

While this whole sorry saga has been unfolding in the public eye, there have been another 10,000+ illegal immigrants crossing the borders, another 20+ under 18's killed or maimed by knives and untold cases of ASBO's being handed down for the joyriding/drink-driving killers.

No I'm not really cynical ..... but if you can look at the papers here then you know the above is far less of a fairytale than England winning a major football tournament.

Well if you are a "hi flying" female executive who objects to the way her boss deals with her, goes to court and gets 115K compensation for hurt feelings and career restrictions surely that's justice in operation especially when a Trooper might get  15k compensation for having a leg blown off in Afghanistan.

All the other stuff is irrelevant ennit ?
Dont forget those mad mullahs who with their 4/5 kids live off welfare.
Its their human right ennit.

PA just fined a company for selling a license plate lense that ruins cam pics- yet are readable with the naked eye.

For 5-6 years- I had a vanity plate. But I switched to a more anonymous plate.

One problem is machine vs man.  The machine, invented to assist mans tasks- is now one mans control of another man, or as it goes a companies control of the consumer.

I beleive we are reaching a point where machines pose a threat.

Since I have been probing phone systems, which as now computer programs...assessing websites where one can shop for more but not cancel, or stop billing.....

it may seem inocouos.  But as time goes on- it is getting more intrusive.

the computer is never wrong.  we are screwed.
