yeah, it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? [:D]

MrSpectacular -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/19/2008 8:03:08 PM)

Yes
Pain is pain - I am not sure that you can change that too much - the enjoyment comes from the sensation and a whole multitude of psychological stimuli that program a particular person to enjoy pain.

Pain is "damage data", the experience of nociceptive or neuropathic damage.

Pleasure, enjoyment, etc. are mental and emotional responses to stimuli in general.

One is a physical response, the other is an emotional response that can be caused by physical input.

Due to neurologic structure or induced states, nociceptive and neuropathic damage can sometimes by some people be anesthetized or be incorrectly trasmitted as other nerve data.  But this recurring discussion isn't about that, it's the old thing about "if you derive pleasure from pain stimulus, is it still pain?".  Yes, it is.   Enjoyment of a type of stimulus doesn't alter what the nervous system, as well as the other physiological responses to that, is doing.

And I feel that it is those "responses" that make the difference.

mas·och·ism n.

The deriving of sexual gratification, or the tendency to derive sexual gratification, from being physically or emotionally abused.
The deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from being humiliated or mistreated, either by another or by oneself.
A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences.

    al·go·lag·ni·a  n.

Sexual gratification derived from inflicting or experiencing pain.

It would be silly to state that these two disorders are one the same.

I think that there is a difference; and like with anything, it can be insignificant or extreme.

eyesopened -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 2:24:00 AM)

For me, pain hurts.  i suffer.  my Master enjoys that.  The more i suffer, the more He enjoys it.  The more He enjoys my suffering the more aroused He is.  The more He is aroused and enjoying me, the more i become aroused and the more i enjoy His energy.  i need Him to be in that aroused and excited state so that energy is transferred to me.  It is that transfer of energy or whatever one calls it, that i crave, need, desire, long for, am damn near addicted to.

my body does not produce endorphins in response to pain.  It is never my own subspace that i seek by submitting to the pain.  It is that contact high i get from the response of my Master.

i don't know if there is a word for how i feel.

I'm sorry if I'm being totally thick here, but from reading the definitions they don't appear to be mutually exclusive.  It seems entirely consistent for some people to crave pain for sexual stimulation (and I'm betting this applies to a few people that post here) which according to the original post would cover both.  Apologies if there are more dimensions to the two conditions or subtlty I'm missing, it's the first time I've heard the term Algolagnia and have done no additional research on it other than reading this thread.

MrRandallspe -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 7:31:25 AM)

lol..true,,yet think of the looks that I would get and the questions.

Wonder how many females will look it up and then track me down wanting to know more.....

Might be one to add to my other twisted tshirt ideas...

Deliena -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 7:57:43 AM)

Can mine say "I'm a bad girl, shall I go to your room now?"

MrRandallspe -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 8:02:59 AM)

    Umm,,I like that idea.

    "If I am a bad girl,,will you spank me...please?"

MrRodgers -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 9:09:25 AM)

For me, your resident lover of the queen's english (and all around hedonistic pleasure-seeker)...with words we make sure of our definitions.

Algolagnia is pleasure derived from pain either receiving...OR giving. So this term applies to both masochists and sadists.

Masochism is pleasure from receiving pain and a whole lot more including humiliation, objectification and suffering discomfort in any number of ways as a matter of pleasure whether or not...your partner takes pleasure in it.

The answer to your question is therefore a resounding YES. For many of the kinkroids in our corner of paradise, if it isn't pain or the others, it isn't a pleasure.

Deliena -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 9:31:58 AM)

Thank you for the additional clarification.  I have a new word today WHOOP

ThundersCry -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 10:06:39 AM)

I suppose it depends on which dictionary you are looking the words up....in.

    Algolagnia=love of pain...

    If my memory serves me....right...

Just as there are different meanings to the word....*masochistic*...*sadism*....sadist*...sadistic*...*slut* ..;.*whore* etc ect

Not that any of this makes alot of...difference.

    It is what it...is.

ExSteelAgain -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 10:11:20 AM)

An educational facet of CM is that we find out what others proclivities are and what activities turn them on. My view is that a submissive wanting or taking pain has such a vast array of reasons that the subject can’t be categorized. We have submissives on this board who will tell you they love each and every stroke with whatever it is. Others say they like the total experience while not liking the pain itself. Some hate the pain at first, but love it as it builds up. Some say they like nothing about it, but desire it anyway. Some will say they can’t explain it.

So why try to label a submissive who likes pain?

If you really want to try something difficult, label Doms who like giving pain for so many reasons, most don’t even try to understand it.

BlackPhx -> RE: Masochism vs Algolagnia (6/20/2008 10:12:45 AM)

    It depends on the pain...

Some pain delights me, makes me eager for the dance and I not only enjoy it in person but crave it enough to fantasize about it. I draw pleasure from it and orgasm easily with it.

Some pain repels me and I endure it for the other person, but while I may not fear it, I don't seek it out. Still I draw pleasure from it and orgasm easily from it to change it's quality.

BUT...while you might try to place me under Algolagnia I also fit under Masochism as if I do not have enough pain in my life, I become highly accident prone to supply it. Again.. accidental pain (broken toes, burns, ripped up toenails, etc) I draw pleasure from it and orgasm easily with it.

Masochism fits and is understood by most to mean one who not only needs the pain but derives pleasure or satisfaction from it.

I think that I will consider myself as a Masochistalgolagniaion

I love to give pain and derive much pleasure in giving it to subs/slaves who love to enjoy feeling and getting the results of the pain I am providing.
