Have you sent out a lot of mail that you don't know about?

Either way why not play it safe and change your password?

GimpinDenial -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 9:10:37 AM)

you will get ALOT of replies (some helpful, some not) considering the term "hacked" I cannot say "ye" or "nay" what are you referring to?
Email? change your password (frequently)
Personal website? if you have a site that logs activity (this is for..erm.. "what ya see is what ya get" type of services) then you shuld be able to trace an ip where changes are made. Again, change all passwords, as well as look into making your site more secure (there is WAY too much to type here, goggle is your friend)
Personal computer? Since most people don't log activity of their pcs, chances are most people are hacked daily and are not even aware of it.

Alot of questions come to mind.
What promotes the question? (what tipped you off)
What type of Antivirus program do you have? (please tell me it is not McAfee or Norton)
What is your firewall settings?

yadda yadda yadda.....

Aileen1968 -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 9:40:00 AM)

OK...I've been changing all of my passwords.  My reasons for becoming suspicious is that a friend had someone hack his computer (documented and being followed by the police.).  Now all of his contacts are beginning to have issues.  His website showed that my ip address had viewed it 13 times yesterday at times when I wasn't even home.  This is all incredibly confusing to me since I'm really not computer savy.  I have avg protection and the last few days the anti spam has been turning off and I've had to go into the control center and turn it back on.

GimpinDenial -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 9:54:01 AM)

mkay, my next question is this.....
Do you have a remote computer access program?
(like pcAnywhere, GoToMyPc, Timbuktu, LapLink)
Because it sounds like this is may be the case...
OR
better yet, who else has access to your computer??

Another thing....if you are not using a dial up service, then just because your firefox or internet explorer is closed, does not mean you are safe. Shut down your modem when you are away for long periods of time (such as work)

If someone DOES have access to your computer, but not with permission, see about getting a screen saver with a password (not fool proof, but...)

Lockit -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 9:54:11 AM)

When I was hacked, I would come on and find settings changed, firewalls off, how things were viewed changed and my friends had similar issues.  Things would be gone or added.  I found new networks that would disappear quickly and files. You need to look for hidden files.  There is a way to find all this out, but at the moment I can't tell you how.  Too early in my day.   There are a lot of things I did.  I changed my ip, hid behind another computer and gave up all email and messenger accounts, didn't contact anyone I knew, etc.  I finally dumped the computer.  If you buy things online... you might want to find a way to protect yourself in that area.

I'm sure someone here can help... they helped me.  I don't know much, but learned a few things in the process of it all.  It was a huge pain in the tail end.  If I can pull myself together, I will email you.  Good luck to you!

AV software shutting down while the PC is running is a very bad sign. Having it happen repeatedly is worse than very bad.

Stop changing passwords! An infected machine muct be assumed to be compromised such that it will track and report any passwords entered.

Do not back anything up of the suspect machine, that might just perpetuate the problem. If possible disconnect from the internet and have your AV do a full scan, or deep scan or whatever AVG calls it. The one that takes hours. If possible have it do it before the OS fully starts, don't know if AVG can do this.

If your AV fails to complete the scan or doesn't start up or anything of the sort it's time to get out teh recovery disk that hopefully came with the box. If you do wind up reinstalling the OS make sure the hard drive is physically reformatted as well.

No matter what change any passwords relevant to any financial info from a different known clean computer or over the phone.

Good luck

I'd listen to this.  He's right on the money.

Have you reported this to your friend?  And I advise removing any and all financial and personal data from that machine and saving it to a USB drive.  Dom Ken has great advice to follow.  Let us know how it goes...

Lockit -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 12:53:18 PM)

The thing with the financial stuff... the hacker has it already if it was hacked into for that purpose, which isn't always the case.  I would be calling all credit cards or banks to get new numbers or watch activity or whatever can be done.  It is better to be safe than sorry and panic than to not do anything and later find you should have.

RCdc -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 12:55:22 PM)

What AVG version do you have?  Free?  Version 8?
What firewall do you use?
What connection do you have to the net?
If you are not comfortable posting that info on the forum, you can email me and I can advise you if I can.

If your IP addy has been used and you weren't home and your machine wasn't on, then its not necessarily you looking.  IPs aren't always set to an individual but to the ISP.  OR It could be that if you connect via wireless, then someone else is using it if it isn't well protected and they are then even able to hack/open access into your network and machine.

You are right about the financial info, Lockit.  That would be very, very bad.  [&:]

farglebargle -> RE: Have I Been Hacked??? (6/19/2008 6:24:27 PM)

I'd say the machine is infected beyond economical and practical repair.

Time for a brain-wipe. You *do* have backups, right? If not, grab a cd image of Knoppix, boot from that, mount your C: drive, and then copy everything off to a USB drive. THEN wipe the partition table and reload from you vendor-supplied windows reload disks, load applications, reload data from USB drive, etc...
