I've heard these words used a few times in a BDSM context, but I'm not sure what they mean and couldn't find a definition online. Are they uniquely American phrases or BDSM specific?

Smart Ass Masochist.  Can sometimes be used as a description of a bottom, with a very smart mouth, who uses the behavior to get the beating that they want.

SAM or SAMMY is defaintely BDSM specific. Often cosidered a bad trait, though not always, a SAM is a smart assed masochist who tries for punishments, knowing how to push the dominants buttons. You'll see it associated with topping from the bottom alot, becasue its seen as being manipulative and trying to get what they want without regard to what will make the dominant happy.

*feels her eye twitch at the mention of sams*

Possibly some of the most annoying people I've ever met LOL

Yes, Smart Assed Masocists.  Will do almost anything annoying/bad/malicious/twitterbrained to get attention or beatings.

Sams tend to be the biggest attention whores around, and are generally easy to spot :D

I use it as a compliment, and hear it as one too.  But, I'm not much into the whole "punishment" paradigm.  I do SM because I enjoy it.  I bottom because it's fun; and I bottom to tops who have fun while doing it.  If I can make the top(s) laugh during the scene, so much the better.

When I top, it's not from a place of anger.  If my submissive makes me angry, I won't touch her.  But she can't make me angry by making me laugh.

I've been called a SAM in fun when having a great, fun time.    And ... I've been called a SAM when, yes, I've had a smart assed mouth, not so much to get attention, but to try and get a point accross out of frustration or an exasperated feeling.   When that happens, I have been put in my place quite quickly.

To those who feel the steam begin to rise the second they hear that word; stop.
Now listen.
There *is* a difference between people who do it because they enjoy life, and want others to lighten up a bit and do the same, and those who are just attention whores.
It's in the intent, and there is a world of difference between the two.
I enjoy my life.
I enjoy helping others to have fun and enjoy theirs.
If someone wants to call me names because of it; well...have at it.
Just don't be surprised when this so-called SAM comes back at ya with a better one, such as boring, uninsightful, and too serious for your own good.
I'm just sayin'...

My owner and I were talking about this, because sometimes I do things to attract a beating. I asked him if it annoyed him or if he wished I would stop, and here is what he had to say:

"Anytime you want to provoke me into beating you, go ahead, you never know if I'm in the mood. Plus, I have ways of shutting that down if it annoys."

And after he said that...I realized he's right! If it is annoying him, he hits me in ways I *don't* like and...he can just choke me out until I am incapable of being a SAM.
So for us, it's something we kind of enjoy, a sort of roleplay, if you will, so it is not always 100% NEGATIVE and indicates that a slave does not care for his/her owner.

Interesting post, Christina.

I agree very much with what one's intent is, and if being a SAM fits in a couple's dynamic, then it's right, for them. No problems, there. It's when one interjects their SAMmyness into some place it isn't welcome that things start to change, for the worse. (I'm not accusing you of that, by the way).

Some sam's don't know when to turn it off. Those are the ones that I dislike. Otherwise, smart assed masochists can be fun.

I've been called that occasionally. Mostly I take it as a compliment.

The difference between good and bad behaviour is that a good submissive angles for a reward and tries to avoid punishment. If my Dominant is clearly in a mood to hit something and I give her an excuse to do it, I don't see this as bad behaviour. On the other hand, if she is clearly not in the mood and I try to push her buttons in order to get my way, that is putting my needs ahead of hers, which most people would regard as pretty unsubmissive.

In other words, "sammy" behaviour is good when you are trying to get a reward for pleasing your Dominant, and bad when you are trying to provoke a punishment. I normally seek out people who have a sense of humour about their fetish interests, so an occasional smart-assed comment is usually not out of line. On the other hand, if a remark of some sort doesn't draw any giggles, I think it's wise not to repeat it.

Why would a dominant need an "excuse" to "hit" their submissive?

I have to say I am a sadist and I do enjoy abit of teasing from my slave from time to time, puts me in a very happy sadistic mood towards her.  Though she has done it at the wrong time before and regreted it all in all I would say it is a matter of what context the behavior comes in.

"Why would a dominant need an "excuse" to "hit" their submissive? "

Well, in one case, it was because I asked her to go easy on me since it was the first time we had ever played together. I knew she was far more into inflicting pain than I was into receiving it, so I was a little nervous about being on the receiving end.

Towards the end of the night she was moping about the fact that neither of the subs she had attended the party with had let her go full out, so I told her she hit like a girl anyway.

Boy did that stop her moping. She was still laughing about it days later.

I doubt I'd have risked saying that with a woman I didn't know very well.

He dips:

QUESTION GUYS n GALS...

So being heavily into the D/s dynamic where I may behave at times as a Sadist but behave as some call a loving Sadist or similar.  (Bloody labels shit ya!)

In the Top/Bottom or S/M context you are refering to the differing inflections/perspectives on what I would call bratty?

Ta for some clarification here.
