SweetNika -> “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 5:10:51 PM)

“I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?”
What does this statement mean?! Here are my thoughts, and yes this is a personal rant of sorts something I rarely if ever do in public yet alone on forums.  Have you ever used this statment?

To me when someone says, this they are saying that I care about you but I am not excited about you. Caring about me is a good thing, but it is not love. Being excited about me is a good thing as well but is not love. To some people when they say “I love you but I am not in love with you” are making a distinction between two different loves in my opinion they are simply expressing their personal confusion . Love is not a feeling, hell its not even an action it’s a verb! It definitely is not a feeling I get from you or you from me, it is a feeling we receive from things we do for each other. And those things are not dirty little secrets!

To say you love someone but your not in love with them is a freaking cope out!! It is your way of saying I don’t know how to stay committed nor do I know how to make this relationship work so I am moving onto something new and exciting and get your next fix.

blessed be,
Nika

For me it is i love my friends, daughter, family but i am not in love with those people.
I am however in love with my partner / sir etc.
Its a different kind of love.

i'm of two minds of that particular phrase.

i think that it's entirely possible to love my friends and be in love with my partner. it is possible to love more than one person in more than one way. i love one of my ex's i think she's a wonderful person, but we broke up because we knew we would never 'love' each other.

at the same time though i do think it's an easy out of a relationship. 'look i'm not trying to hurt you really i'm not but more than likely i already have someone lined up...'

DarkSteven -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 5:24:40 PM)

It means that a romantic relationship is not going to happen.

Agreed.

Lockit -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 5:34:37 PM)

I don't agree that it is a cop out.  One can love someone and not be in love with them.  Some will take the love and act it out and some won't.  Some need that in love and some don't.

Sabella -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 5:41:40 PM)

Ditto I don't agree that it's a cop out either. At least it's a stab at some honest? Would you rather hear "I love you!" with no explaination or conditions and then figure out along the way that they don't love you the way you'd hoped?

corsetgirl -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 5:46:21 PM)

This is not a cop out but mostly the realization that you can care about this particular person but the chances for a sustaining a long-term relationship is not going to happen.

I found that out the hard way which, I have moved on.  As an ex would tell me,"You would know when love has hit you in the a** when you least expect it."  Have not found that yet.

Has any guy ever used it when he WASN'T looking to get laid?

It's a cop out.

I quoted this to agree with it. You love a person, but you don't love them enough to form a lasting, loving relationship.

I agree with the part about romanticism not happening, but I don't agree with the part about not forming a lasting, loving relationship.

My Master loves me but is not "in love" with me.  There is no infatuation.  I'm his pet and he loves me as his pet.  There is no romantic love, but there is love, and it's lasted four years and counting.

Love can be deep, whether one is "in love" or not.  "In love" is the fun, exciting, romantic part.  Love, however, is what tends to stay the course over the long run.  My mother was no longer "in love" with my father but damn if she wasn't there caring for him till his death, every day and every night, devoted to his care and well being.

I agree with the guys, it's a cop out. LOL.  "I like ya well enough, but I'm looking for or have found something better."

MissSCD -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 7:18:12 PM)

I have thought about this a lot.  I think it may be that there is not a quote "hot lustful sexual" relationship with the love but not love thing.
That still doesn't mean we don't love them.  In actuality it is a stronger type love.

slvemike4u -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 7:20:15 PM)

Usually a precursor to goodbye

Lockit -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 7:31:41 PM)

It really depends.  I have heard it said by a man just doing the friends with benefits thing... (which lines up with what many of you are saying) I have said it with someone I loved dearly but knew we were not a good fit and thus I could not have those in love feelings with... I have had love without the in love and could have fit and remained there for life, very happy, but that was not to be because of other things outside of us.  I am going to conceed, that at times it is used as a cop out... but doesn't always mean it is a cop out.  It depends.

slvemike4u -> RE: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you?” (6/22/2008 7:36:23 PM)

Lockit when a woman says that to me I start planning my exit, everything after that is everyone just waiting for something better to come along...IMO

Actually, it's more often when they've already GOTTEN laid - and found a new, more desirable piece of ass to tap - that the "I love you, but I'm not In Love with you" gets pulled out of the repetoir.  That removes it from the realm of "cop out" and places it squarely in the realm of "blow off."
