If the opportunity arose for you to be in an article detailing lifestyle BDSM, would you do it?
More importantly:
What are your limits on the article concerning your life?
What sort of things would you mention in the article(safety, local happenings, etc)?
Would you allow for a photo to be taken, and if so, of yourself engaging in the lifestyle, regular ol' you, or no picture?

i guess it would depend on where it was published, who would have access to it and so on.

I've had the home I lived in aired on television, and articles posted in various newspapers.  It wasn't pleasant, and I'd prefer to never have to go through that again.  Given the opportunity to be published in a Kink friendly publication or documentary, I'd very likely decline.  10 years ago I had the energy and motivation to be an advocate for BDSM and Kink awareness.  Not so much these days.  I like my life peaceful and private, and free of reporters and news crews camping out in the driveway.

I've dealt with this issue in two other subcultures in my life:
* the non-profit SCA in the 1970s, when most print and TV articles treated us as silly-season features at best
and a 5-minute feature on "Real People" was a milestone of non-sensationalized reporting,
* and the religion Wicca in the 1990s, where the sensationalism was perhaps 25% less than before...
...as long as you were talking to a journalist from a major network or metro area.
I once fended off a call from the producers of the Ricki Lake show wanting to interview a witch. Gah.
I've done my time as thankless representative of alternative life (hobby, lifestyle, religion, whatever).

Sure.

I would not reveal anything that could give away my vanilla identity.

Interests, experiences, local events.

Only if my face did not show.

Biggest problem would be the fact that reporters have a tendancy to reword things on their own to make the story better without regard for the person interviewed as a source.

Similar to what happens here then when I get my own words fed back to me and metaphorically rammed down my throat by so-called like-mided people.
jeeeeeeeees there's sharks in deep................

During the late '80's and early '90's, the PEP chapter I was on the board of was approached by several papers about doing peices on us, and on the growing popularity of the BDSM scene. I still carry the clippings in my scrapbook, partially as mementos of a better time, but also as a grim reminder of how the straight, conservative world will portray you.

Although one local "news and arts weekly" paper presented us and our activities as something positive in the age of AIDS, the more mainstream papers did the usual hatchet peices on how we were probably the cause of that plauge.

Before putting yourself out there, for all the world to see, do your research on those who are writing your story. Find out if they have a social, or political axe to grind.

We're not the only ones who seem to garner this sort of... (I think Prinsexx used the right word) marginalization from the media. The subcultures of science fiction fandom, of Wicca, of alternative sexuality of any stripe, have been abused as fodder for "fluff" journalisim. (Even alternative energy proponents, until recently, have been made to look like fools... of course, in their case, that has changed with the sudden, desperate need for what they have to offer.)

I advise extreme caution, if you are being courted for being the centerpeice of such an article.

I'd rather write it.  Failing that, I'd probably give the journalist a coronary or make them pee their pants laughing [I'm an either/or kinda guy].  There isn't anything in my life I need to keep private, and depending on the wording...

*tries not to rub his hands together and cackle*

Photo?  Meh, sure, or I wouldn't have one on the internet.  Photo of me doing something?  Well, that would involve someone else's consent, now...and playing, even as a demo, for a photo shoot?  Hmm, yeh, that's something I would discuss with Rain first.  Common sense, that.

nope; i have a minor child and that in and of itself can have him taken away from me...

some things just aren't worth the risk!
