Another sign of hard times for many people. Are you folks seeing this in your areas?

"Tourist states with temperate climates, such as California and Florida, have long been magnets for the homeless. Los Angeles is the nation's homelessness capital, with an estimated 73,000 people on the streets. A survey of 3,230 homeless people last year in Los Angeles County found nearly 7 percent living in vehicles, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

"It's trending toward an increase," said Michael Stoop, acting executive
director of the National Coalition for the Homeless. "People would rather live in a vehicle than wind up in a shelter, and you can't stay on a friend's couch forever."

People living out of their cars or campers tend to be more well-off than the homeless on the street. They usually have jobs or disability checks that enable them to maintain an old camper but do not allow them to afford rent."

Thanks for the post, Vendaval.
I am sure many of these people go unnoticed.
Sad to say, there will be many more of these
people as time's get harder.

The woman featured in the article is on disability, which last I checked meant that she was unable to work, not that there was no work.... is someone suggesting a causal link between the economy and mental illness?

The rest of the article pointed out quite correctly that some homeless people have always liked to go where it is warm, and where they can live in non-traditional conditions. Ever been under the bridge to Key West?

And what exactly does 'trending toward an increase' mean? Is that anything like 'preparing to start getting ready'?

I don't see how it helps those homeless people who could benefit from a better system, to create scare stories about another great depression, and cite them as 'proof'.

back in the mid 80's, when i lived in monterey for a couple of years, there were all kinds of people living in cars, rv's and buses. they had a "3 night rule", where you could only park for 3 nights at any one place, and the cops were very understanding and nice about telling them to move to a different beach or lake after the 3 nights.

one waitress that i got to be friends with lived in an old bus, had an honor roll student kid who she always managed to get to school every day some how.

i hope they are still as understanding out there. for many, one month with no rent may be all they need to save up a deposit to get back in some kind of real shelter.

This is why I cut checks to homeless shelters.
Mia's right, we need to start taking care of our own house first instead of sending all kinds of money overseas!
If *one* person is homeless in the U.S.there shouldn't be anyforeign aid!
But, I do sense some kind of solution; "homeless people"+ "many homes standing empty."
What we need to do is get manufacturing back in this country and stop importing dangerous, cheap, shoddy junk from China and other countries where they pay the workers $3 per day.
Ha! And the big corps thought they were being smart moving factories overseas to save money from well paid factory workers here.
Their only miscalculation was that the people who would be consuming that junk would no longer be making $30 an hour like they used to be! Boy did they fuck that up!

the American economy struggling {at best}.

Maybe! they will bring the jobs BACK to the U.S.A. that
they began outsourcing 30 years ago?

i don't feel like it's more people are doing it now; just more people are finally taking notice of it now...

plus, i find the people getting disability checks, welfare check and whathaveyou(while living in vehicles) as NOT being entirely acurate...

i remember having to live in my car for about three months way back when, due to an on the job injury, and at the time, i had an infant there with me...

while i was lucky enough to be able to park on someones property that i knew, as well as using shower and kitchen facilities, i was unable to receive unemployment, medicaid or any other state assistance/finances as i had no physical mailing address; they would not accept the property owners address as being mine since i didn't physically reside in the house...

it's funny(not in a good way of course) how fast people can get lost in the cracks, and even funnier how much more clearly people are seen when the local news covers their stories!

Mz. Mia and Popeye, here are some stats for Mass.

"About 1,800 homeless families were in Massachusetts shelters last week up from 1,400 in June 2006 and just under 1,200 in June 2005, according to state figures. There are more families in shelters now than at any time since the inception of the state's family shelter program in 1983, according to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless."

Alumbrado, I don't view these types of reports as scare tactics, rather another example of the economic problems.

It's not just LA where people are living in their cars. Any given morning when I get up, I count the number of teens in their vehicles sleeping in my driveway. All of these kids work--none can afford a place to live. So they fall through the cracks because they don't qualify for assistance. It's a sad state we live in. I agree, we need more foreign aid going to US.

What a steaming pile of crap... LOL 7% living in vehicles including RV's... Liberal propaganda about the POOR HOMELESS PEOPLE. I have a buddy of mine who retired from Continental Airlines as a senior captain. He actually gets two sets of retirement benefits - one from the USAF and another from Continental Airlines. He and his wife live in an RV... Rest assured he doesn't need "help" from anyone - he chooses to live in an RV, because with their kids grown, out of the nest, and raising their own familes these two retirees are spending their golden years criss crossing the country, living where they want when they want and having a change of scenery when the idea suits them.... They have Sattelite TV, cell phones, T-Mobile Wireless Broadband, and every convenience known to man. In fact I would say they have a pretty damned nice life in their RV- which actually costs more than the average American house.

When I was between marriages, I lived on a boat and I assure you that you needn't feel sorry for me. I loved it and only stopped because I got married again and she came with a premade family so the "Girls Gone Wild" meets "Margarittaville" lifestyle wasn't conducive to that. Living on a boat was great! Talk about parties - you know its pretty nice to be able to go outside the 3 mile limit so the neighbors cant complain LOL. I had draft beer, a fully galley including a microwave oven. a propane BBQ grill, sattelite TV with DVD player in both the salon and my stateroom, fishing gear, scuba gear, water toys galore... Yeah its a tough life... drunken blondes sunbathing nude, grilled seafood dinners that were alive just minutes before, a steady soundtrack of Jimmy Buffet...Oh I suffered I tell ya! I suffered like hell when I had to get OFF the boat and come ashore to go to work!!! Even now, despite living on the Bay, Im seriously thinking of moving my boat down to Galveston so as to use it as a weekend home...

I wonder how many "victims" like myself and the friend mentioned previously are included in those statistics? Ever think a lot of the RV crowd are pretty well off and chose to enjoy the freedom of waking up in the Colorado mountains Tuesday, going to Vegas thursday, and dipping their toes in the Pacific Ocean on Monday?

I'm not up on the details, but I thought you couldn't collect a disability check while working a job. And the time frame involved in filing for disability makes it unlikely that her personal story is in fact a result of today's economy.
