When oil finally becomes too expensive for the common man, there is a hope ;

and it outruns a porsche and a ferrari

How many "common men" can afford a car with a 6-figure pricetag?

It's a start, success often breeds competition

Interesting....the problem is that at $98,000 Dollars, for that same money I would rather buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini... Plus no one ever talks about what happens if you get in an accident in one of those...do you get "shocked/electrified"? It also seems the Tesla by being light has something resembling duraplast much like the fomer East German Trabant...we know what happened to that car. Interesting "project" at best.

Well I suppose if you have an accident be it electrocution or frying, you are pretty screwed anyway. The point is, though someone if they had 98k to buy a ferrari or lamborghini, they are still going to need a lot of cash to buy the fuel. Oil is the problem, it is rising at an exorbitant rate and will no doubt at some point run out. For the private user, what are the options without oil.

I've been madly in love with the Tesla for a couple of years now, ever since the first prototype garnered the attention of "Beyond Tomorrow" on the Discovery Channel (at least I think that's where I think I saw it first). It's fast, has extremely sexy lines, and it makes me want to roll around nekkid on the hood

I just spent last Saterday at Raceway Park and watched the NITRO powered race cars. There's a fuel that out powers electricity. There are many alternatives to oil power electricity being one of them. As for accidents...ask Scott Kalitta...oh wait, he died in a crash on Saterday and his speed was 0-300 mph in 4 seconds! My point is, there are so many ways to power our travel that to cling to one source for profits sake isn't helping many. The dangers of traveling faster than a walk is a risk many are willing to take. Scott was a pioneer much like Emelia Erhart and et al, they lost thier lives in thier pursuit of it. TESLA technology has been around for a long time, it's about time someone brought it out and showed what it can do.

Yes, and God knows how often I drag race on my daily morning commute...

GM was building electric cars with a 200 mile range less than a decade ago. It was in response to the zero emissions legislation they had passed. Unfortunately, CA wussed out, backed off the laws, and detroit recalled them all and had them destroyed.

Hell, in the early days of the automobile (1900-1920s), electrical and steam-powered cars seemed just as viable as the gasoline engine.

As for the Tesla, well, that seems to be what the software industry refers to as "vaporware" (vapourware for youz guys in the UK ). They originally promised to start delivering them more than a year ago... last i heard, not a single one has been placed in private hands, or even fully tested by an independent third party. It's sexy and well hyped, but i'll believe the claims when i see them borne out by a few major auto magazines.

The 1st practical car was extremely expencive and only the wealthy could afford one.

Ford turned that around but it took time and money to develop the Model 'T' for common folks to drive.

Perhaps, Owner. However, the folks at Chevy already have a near-fully electric car coming in a year or two - the Volt. And even at its unfortunately higher-than-first-thought price tag, it's still a fraction of the cash you'd spend on a Tesla roadster.

Maybe if the government would divert some of the hidden subsidies for petroleum burning technologies to electric cars, the costs would come down... sooner. But they will come down.

Another thing to consider when comparing the Tesla to a similar gas powered auto, cost of maintenance. High performance engines are very expensive to maintain whereas an electric motor is immensely more reliable, stable long-wearing, at a fraction of the cost.

If it sounds like a milk float they ain't going to buy it. There is also a higher risk of getting run over by an electric car as yet only proven with the old people mobiles you don't see coming in the shopping arcades.

My next car will be electric power most likely but I don't expect to be buying a new car soon.

"Green" cars are not going to become popular until they are worth the cost. 25k for a Toyota Prius is too much money for many people. Some people just cannot get approved for a loan that high either because of poor income or bad credit.

Even a Smart car is 16k. "16k for that little thing?" That's what most people are going to say.

And prices wont decline. Electronics is the only sector where prices decline fast because the next best thing comes out so fast.
Cars though have not dropped the MSRP in decades. Those prices never go down.

Well, I was impressed when I saw the car on Youtube this morning whilst searching for cold rare earth magnetic engines after reading more on Nichola Tesla himself, a man I have long admired. I believe his technology even made it into the violet ray device in the form of a tesla coil, a high voltage low current resonant transformer with a high frequency, the thing that makes the sparks crackle.

As long as we are to have electricity as a main power source, then I think there is no reason why personal and public transport should not also be powered by electricity. The only thing really in the past to limit the viability of an electric vehicle, was the electricity storage devices, the batteries, big and heavy lead acid lumps. Now as with the Tesla car, batteries are rapidly changing and as said in the video, the Tesla uses lithium Ion, much the same type of battery as in our lap top computers, just lots more of them, an area of technology on the move, and can only get better.

Don't get me wrong, I love petrol engines, but as long as oil is going to continue to be an increasingly expensive commodity, I can see all these lovely growling V8s and V twins coming to a decaying standstill, that is, unless a viable alternative fuel can be found and I don't think the answer is bio fuel when so much of the world is starving.

I wonder if society might become more relaxed if it wasn't bombarded with the constant noise and pollution of heavy traffic?

Hmm, I wonder, a Tesla motor in a motorcycle ?

Wait a year. Oh and by stock in Honda. Next year, Honda rolls out three new hybrid models, each only $1K more than the original model. At least one of the new hybrids is only available in hybrid form and looks SWEET. They will definitely be making a concerted effort to corner the market on new hybrid sales. Hell the ones they have cookin' up even have me wanting one. That CR-Z looks badass for a hybrid.

Cyberdude - Most of the cabbies in this town drive a Prius (Priuses? Prii?). I asked one about the economy - he figured he'd saved 7k on gas in one year AND the brakes were still barely worn after 100 thousand km (about 60,000 miles). Cabbies are generally pretty value conscious. I don't think they'd buy green cars if the bottom line didn't support the choice.
