Ravel -> Which collar to chose (6/24/2008 12:28:27 PM)

I have a small dillema ..... I want to make a leather collar for my slave and have no idea where to start.  I would love some advice on how to make one or even a site to check.  Any and all ideas appreciated.  I did have an idea of it being leather with chainmail added to it.  Just don't know and would like some advice pleeeeeaaaaaassssseee.

Let's brainstorm, I do work in both leather and chainmail. Let me know what you're looking for and we can come up with something together. Send me a PM and we can talk...

I have seen some of Blasts work and she would be a good one to help you with this.

Blast - Looking foward to seeing you again when you are in town next month.

The first collar I ever made:  http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii172/MsStarlett/Toys/CollarFront.jpg

You can check out the profile of my boy WestPet for a pic of the second one.

Luckily, my husband does quite a bit of leather work and showed me the basics.  Believe it or not, I found the hardest part to be setting the spikes.  That involves stacking so many tools... the polymer cutting board, then the anvil, the rounded bottom of the stud inserted through the leather, then the spike, the spike setter... hold it all really straight and pound on it with a well used raw hide mallet that is no longer flat on the bottoms.  *sigh*

The process of making collars is fairly simple.  But all the tools to get started start running into money.

Jeez-Louise that's fearsome looking. Cool!

Thank you for the replies.  I was thinking of the leather not really being the focal point but the chainmail.  I've seen some interesting patterns for chainmail but not sure if they would work.  I have most of the tools already for my other projects so not worried about tools.

Well Ravel, tell me what weaves or ideas you have in mind and we can set to work on it. One of my favorites actually was a inverted roundmaille weave (http://derakon.chainmailstore.com/iround.html) with a length of rawhide bootlace laced through the middle of the roundmaille and used at the tie in place of a clasp. Roundmaille can be rather stiff at times and won't bend back on itself but it will bend and lay nicely around a neck.

I also love a triple connected byzantine made from square wire, the rings look like lock washers. Again super artsy, yet functional, and a little different than the norm. I know  many weaves and am always looking to learn more. Like I said before shoot me a message and we can go from there.

Thanks Sir Mike for the endorsement, I'm stoked to be going back to SD for Leather Realm and also be presenting. Hopefully I can catch your electro demo too...

Knitting chainmail is a very specific art.  You may want to browse through some of the SCA sites for more information.  I have a friend who does my chain - he uses the '6 in 1' pattern.  It looks nice.  But beyond that - I can't tell you a THING about it.

---Edit---

And thank you Terms.  I might take back what I said about your pathetic penis.  But that might make you feel neglected... so let's let that one stand.

Yeah I can make/knit/weave all kinds of patterns. In the renfaire circuit there are some specific weaves designated for specific uses or ranks as they were "authentic" to the time. I kind of look at it the same way I look at "Old Guard" I pick and choose which aspects work for me and for my personal relationship and go from there. To me although 6-1 can be quite gorgeous, to make a collar of it out of stainless steel it would be quite heavy and not often look appropriate on males. There are lots of really pretty 6-1 pieces, it's just not for me personally, but then again a lot of what I weave doesn't fit my tastes.

I don't know if this is useful to you, but you might want to think backwards and start with the clasp. I have the original leather collar Sir made and gave to me several years ago. The leather is great, but we've gone through several clasps in that time.

We have finally settled on one that has really worked out very well.-rare earth magnets. It's easy to take on and off (obviously if you are going for a permanant collar, you'd probably want to choose something else. Sir chose one that *could* be removed, however I only remove it to shower and it goes right back on) and has not caught in my hair once. Other clasps have pulled great wads of hair and have been problematic.

Best of luck,

PL

The roundmail was something I had in mind.  It's pretty and not as hard as it looks.  On the clasp I have no earthly idea.  The magnets sound nice, are there any other choices that might work well?  It's always nice to find people who know about the SCA.  Been playing for a while and I love it.  It's what got me started on leather work.  So lets say I go with the round weave how would I attach it to the leather?
