Weird questions (maybe). I need to replace a toilet and have all of my shower/tub faucet/showerhead things replaced and my tub reglazed. Now I did find some reglazing places through my old fashioned yellow pages but who do I call for a new toilet and faucet stuff? Am I supposed to buy a potty from Home Depot then have someone come out? Do I have the reglazing of the tub done last? I've seen a toilet replaced and it is way more work than I can do myself. Plus it is kind of icky messy. Jeez I feel stupid but this is stuff I have never had to do before, so here I am. Begging the bright minds of CM for bathroom insight. [:)] Thanks!

Around here, anyway, plumbers don't like you buying your own stuff. It is much less expensive, and you get to pick what you want, but if anything doesn't work properly, or the plumber goofs, he will the blame the parts that he did not supply.

Thank you DomKen. Do I need to look for any particular type of plumber? Or is a plumber a plumber is a plumber? After the bathroom is done I have only two rooms to paint and recarpet. Then I am DONE and my home is for sale. Bittersweet. Then again with this frightening housing market I may be bittersweeting for nothing.

Yea, either find a willing sub/slave to install them or just call a plumber. You will be surprized at the wide range of products a plumber can get that you will never find at a box store. All the box store carry are the large mass produced models,

Doing stuff like this puts me outside my comfort zone, not knowing who to use for what sort of job. Getting a house this size ready for sale has involved a ton of different things that I have not had to do before, so while it has been incredibly difficult I am also proud of all that I accomplished. All by myself!! It has taken me almost 3 years to get to this point and for the first time the end is really in sight. What a good feeling. A lot of you here have helped me, and I am really grateful for that. For having a resource where I can ask my goofy and sometimes downright stupid question without being laughed at (much [:D] ).

Camille... I tackled the job of installing a toilet by myself. I did not think i could do it but wanted to try, and knew i could call a plumber if i failed. Guess what...i did it!! It is not as hard as you might think. But..if you don't want to try it..i would get the name of a good plumber from a trusted source and talk with him. Tell him you really need to keep the costs down and have him give you a list of what you will need to have for him to do the job.

I agree ask around You can also call the BBB or look up a local union, you might even find they have a training class going on and you will save a bundle But don't just open the phome book and call the people with the biggest ad

You do NOT need a plumber to replace a toilet. Waste of money. All you need are some tools, some teflon tape, a wax ring, and the toilet. I recommend getting a tall one rather than standard height.

Unless you know about plumbing, please be aware that not all toilets flush equally efficiently. Call your plumber and ask him for a recommendation of a plumbing supply house. Their models will be better than the cheaper Home Depot ones. He should tell you if you should carry it home or if he will pick it up. Ask which he prefers. Doing it this way allows you to get the color of your dreams and also the quality you need. Ask questions of the people at the plumbing supply showroom. Caveat, if they try to talk you into body sprays, that only works if you're living in new construction with 1" water lines. Older homes simply won't have the pressure needed.

Any idiot handyman can replace a toilet. You absolutely do not need a master plumber. (Master plumbers are for critical systems like medical gases , industrial process vacuum, high pressure steam etc) Replacing a toilet is super easy. shut off water behind it. Unscrew flexible supply line (om my toilet you dont even need a wrench to do this.)Undo two bolts holding it to the floor and remove old toilet. Set on front lawn, fill with potting soil, plant flower in it. Have a beer come back in... throw out old wax ring, and old bolts, but in new brass bolts and lay down new brass ring. Tighten two bolts. Reconnect water supply line turn water back on. Flush to check for leaks. If there are leaks, tighten bolts further. If the whole process takes 30 min youre going too slow lol. Changing faucets is even easier...

Replacing a toilet is fairly simple. However, the OP stated she couldn't do it herself. If she is going to have someone else do it, than she shouldn't hire "any idiot handyman." Idiot handymen don't guarantee their work, but a reputable plumbers will. It's true that it will cost her more money, but it's better than having the job botched by some idiot or being taken by a con artist. You can cause serious damage to your flooring and plumbing by having a toilet improperly installed.

She also wants to replace her bathroom faucets. That's another job you can do yourself but if you don't, it should be done by a professional plumber.

TheEngineer's sister had to replace a good bit of her flooring because the idiot do-it-yourself-er who remodeled her house before she bought it didnt put in a wax ring! egads! and for someone with limited mobility, installing a toilet is easy but lifting the old one out and the new one in is damn near impossible. kitten

There's also the issue of the tools needed. Taking a toilet out is best done with a tool that closely resembles a hand truck. I've done it with a prybar and a couple of claw hammers but it wasn't nearly as easy as it would have been with that tool.

just be sure however you get it done, you check the codes. i know here, you can not sell a house without the low flow toilets. if you dont have them, you have to get them. of course were in a drought. ive done it my self, but it involved cussing and such. of course, if i have to do it again, ill know how to do it correctly-lol. first time took all day, i hope next time no more than an hour or so.

Replaced my grandmothers toilet back in the mid 90's. The nuts on the floor bolts were rusted solid, the wax ring had decayed. and deposits had built up on the underside of the toilet. Even once I got the nuts off, the toilet still wouldn't come loose. It took me and two uncles to get the thing loose from the floor. We called a plumber to come in and get the other toilet out, same problems and he popped it out in no time once he got the nuts off. But what do I know I was only there.
