This is Darcy I've been a bit behind the times since moving last week as my new internet connection at home won't be up and running for another couple of weeks (and so if this has already been covered then my apologies as it didn't show up in Search), so it was with great sadness that I stumbled across the news that FX legend Stan Winston had passed away. In these days of CGI effects, it is easy to forget that back in the day everything was done 'for real' and one of the pioneers of the great monster making tradition was Mr Winston. Stan created the xenomorphs in Aliens and the exoskeleton in the first Terminator (both of which he won Oscars for, and both of which rate highly in my favourite movies of all time list), and was instrumental in the creation of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park that I know took my breath away the first time I saw them on the big screen (for which he won his third Oscar, and deservedly so). He was also nominated for his work on Edward Scissorhands and Predator among other movies, but on top of all that, every word I've ever read about him within the horror and wider movie community has always praised him for being a genuinely pleasant and inspirational man. Stan was just 62, which is no age really, and so with a heavy heart I bid him a belated farewell as one of the men who helped to shape and define my love of horror and monster movies. Rest in piece, Stan.
