I've been a bit behind the times since moving last week as my new internet connection at home won't be up and running for another couple of weeks (and so if this has already been covered then my apologies as it didn't show up in Search), so it was with great sadness that I stumbled across the news that FX legend Stan Winston had passed away.

In these days of CGI effects, it is easy to forget that back in the day everything was done 'for real' and one of the pioneers of the great monster making tradition was Mr Winston.

Stan created the xenomorphs in Aliens and the exoskeleton in the first Terminator (both of which he won Oscars for, and both of which rate highly in my favourite movies of all time list), and was instrumental in the creation of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park that I know took my breath away the first time I saw them on the big screen (for which he won his third Oscar, and deservedly so).

He was also nominated for his work on Edward Scissorhands and Predator among other movies, but on top of all that, every word I've ever read about him within the horror and wider movie community has always praised him for being a genuinely pleasant and inspirational man.

Stan was just 62, which is no age really, and so with a heavy heart I bid him a belated farewell as one of the men who helped to shape and define my love of horror and monster movies.

Rest in piece, Stan.

Harryhausen & Winston are the reason special effects are where they are today. Both were incredible artists, makig the most of their craft, while entertaining hundreds of millions of movie goers.

Truely a sad day for movie lovers.

Our lives are the richer for his creative brilliance and our hearts saddened by his passing.  Rest In Peace, Stan Winston.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ray Harryhausen a few years ago. He had just finished a book signing at a comic store in London, which I had known nothing about, so when myself and a couple of friends who had been out for a few beers popped in you could have knocked us down with a feather.

Though he was about to leave, Ray kindly stood and chatted to us for twenty minutes, and then signed a copy of his book for me before letting each of us take a photograph with him.

A true gent.
