Cash.  Up front.  In full.  Or no go.

If someone wants to call you a fucking bitch, the least you can do is measure up, no?

Sounds like she is crazy, stupid and a liar, so make sure you get paid. Maybe you can break the project into chunks so you could demand 1/4 up front, do 1/4 of the project, then get the next 1/4 and so on.

Double your rates and demand payment upfront. Refuse to do anything until after her check has cleared.

She had two deadlines to make payments, one of which is about to pass.  I don't take checks- it's either PayPal, Alert Pay or Western Union.  I don't start work until the payment clears... that was a tough lesson I've been on both sides of.

I'm kind of hoping she doesn't pay me, because that solves it.  If she does, then I do it- but I'll be very firm.  An obscenity or anything screamed means I have to hang up.

Thank you for all the advice.  I don't like drama.  I like quiet substance.

I think Sundowner covered all the bases, including your altruistic concerns. Excellent, detailed advice and no consultants fee. That's as good as it gets.

Ooooh cj! Thanks sir. Want to handle our PR and marketing account?  [sm=smile.gif]

wow. ouch.

I guess it depends on your 'forgiveness ability scale'. You may or may not be able to let this instance of her having a kinipshit roll off your back like water on a duck.

Once seeing this kind of behaviour, I'm not sure I would chance tolerating it twice.  Ask yourself if there is high risk of this occuring again? and if you can do this project with little contact with her as possible?

I feel bad for you being in that predicament. [:(]

there are points in life when YOU are the bad guy.  no matter what you say, spend, arrange, mail, cook, drive, pay, promise, pray, kneel, beg, you will be the bad guy.

So knowing you are evil, you are this bad person, accept  that come hell or high water   this jane doe is out to make you he entire shitlist.     in the meantime humor her = take her money.

web designers are quickly becomming  a dime a dozen.   being that her finished site will be one you can use as a model for future business eat a small bit of  crap.

but know when to say when, and dont turn away easier gravy work to take this project on.

I don't deal well with screaming in any fashion.  That's what gags are for. It was so bad, I was in tears.

Then I do some research.  Turns out the domain name I found for her (which really is great) was still available.  She had typed it in wrong.  I sent her an email letting her know she was mistaken, and explaining that she should get it while she could because domain registration sites keep records of those domains people search for.

Here's where I need advice.  This woman now realizes that she has made a mistake.  She called me back.  She purchased the domain and she really wants me to build what we talked about. During the ten minutes we spoke the second time tonight, she apologized, cajoled, begged, appealled to my better nature, and promised that she would be a saint to work with.  She says she understands that if she doesn't pay me, I can't work with her.  She also says that she has passion, which is definitely true, and that I should only want to work with people who are as passionate as I am... Flattering, but I don't know.  What I do know is that the project is one I would love to do.  It's something really positive and good, and even if she is nuts, she's not stupid.  I told her that I would give her an answer tomorrow.

Would you take the job?  My client would be completely insane, but the project would be fabulous.

Wow, I applaud you for getting back with her on her mistake...I would've seriously been tempted not to tell her and let her figure it out AFTER she hires all the lawyers...heh  But she is the client, and you are the consultant, so the customer is always right.. And this is business...   Sounds to me like she has a real problem dealing with temper if things don't go her way, and sounds like she can act fabulous if things are going her way....

Whatever the true mental state of her is doesn't matter as long as you can establish a professional working relationship that gets the job done, and keep your distance from other aspects of her, that should be good enough.  But just remember, you'll have to deal with that aweful treatment again if things don't go her way.... So, it's upto you, what the chances of the project going bad are, and if there is a chance, can you put up with another of one of her tirades without jeopardizing the success of the entire project?

If you think the project is fabulous, and there would be no problems, and such a great success would boost your career, then go for it...with caution.  I wouldn't care what went on behind her ears, as long as the superficial acts are there and you can work with her.   Just a professional business-to-customer basis, you guys aren't romantically involved and there's no deep trust involved.
