The problem appears to be when people confuse an online collar with being real life, as opposed to role-playing.

Cali

i see your point Cali, but whose "problem" is it?

Personally, i see a problem with adults who enjoy eating fecal matter but i don't feel the need to fix their problem or even diagnose it here. And if i trashed them for it i would violate TOS. And really, that is quite a bit more deviant than an online "bling"  fetish~

Again, just saying...

Thadius -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/7/2008 8:28:13 PM)

Evening,

To use your example, I don't have to partake in the effects of other fetishes (like the one you mentioned) here on the boards.  If we are to accept that online bling is a fetish/kink, should the rest of the community have to deal with the drama (not that this is the only cause of drama around here [;)] ) that usually follows?

Just a couple of quick thoughts,
Thadius

Thadius.

I completely agree with you.

Greetings Thadius,

Very good point [:)]

However, my question stands and does not involve the OP and his melodrama.
We always have the choice to leave a thread...the beauty of online. we can leave a topic as easily as the release of a cyber collar. It only has the power we give it~

Can we not afford them the common courtesy of allowing them to explore their kink without sarcasm and disdain? Wouldn't you like that same courtesy applied to your kink?

RedMagic1 -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/7/2008 10:26:52 PM)

I don't believe in spewing vitriol.  I do, however, believe that online-only relationships are more emotionally dangerous than real-life ones.  The kink may be consensual, but it is seldom risk-aware.

Human beings are emotionally wired to have responses to real-life events.  The availability of online is similar to the availability of junk food and high-fructose corn syrup.  The human body craves those foods because historically fats and sugars were in short supply.  No, it's not a sin to eat a Twinkie, and people might find it kinky to eat nothing else -- but if they ask me why they feel all bloated and hollow, I'm going to point out they might want to try some green vegetables.

It's a wonderful concept, but it doesn't exist here, unfortuantely.  Disdain is indeed the appropriate word for it, too.  I have no idea why people are so passionate about something they don't like being "less than" what they find appropriate, but they do.  I see it as a rather arrogant approach to others.  I've been sarcastically called "uber-wannabe" and "holier-than-thou" on more than one occasion on these boards and in CMail, but I tend to find that label applies more appropriately to those who condem others for doing something they personally don't believe in.

You and Dawntreader make great points.  But you are the minority, for sure.  And there is nothing that can be said that will change the minds of others on this particular topic (online relationships).  People are going to spew the venom they choose to spew, and condem others for the way they express themselves.  It's just the way it is.

Still, it's refreshing to see posts like yours and Dawntreaders, amidst a sea of vitriol.

Sundowner -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/8/2008 12:05:36 AM)

It's wonderful to see CM in the raw - all upfront and typical of the sophistication we have come to know and love.

In effect the OP politely says "I'd like to give my girl fillet steak for dinner; anyone know a good way to serve it please?"

And from the intellectually challenged he gets variations on "Eating steak is wrong".

CalifChick -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/8/2008 12:17:03 AM)

Hmmm.  I see it more as the OP saying, "I'd like to eat a picture of a steak, I've never done it before, I don't know how to do it, I don't know anyone who has done it (or I'd ask them)... any ideas on how to do that?"

Sure some people will tell you how to cut up the paper and chew it, but most people will tell you how much better the real steak tastes. And others will go on to tell you that if you do eat the picture, and someone later asks you if you've ever eaten steak, they wouldn't consider it truthful if you said yes.

Or even - Hey, I'm going to pretend to eat a picture of a steak.  And I want you all to treat it as if pretending to eat a picture of a steak has as much sophistication of experience as actually eating a steak in a restaurant, and I'll be offended if you don't.  Further, I'm also going to expect you to respect my opinions and insight on steak, even though not only haven't I ever eaten one, I haven't even eaten a picture of one.

I'm not a real Doctor, but I play one on TV, and nine out of ten TV Doctors hired by Johnson and Johnson recommend Johnson and Johnson products, don't you owe it to your family to prevent their immediate death in flames by going out and buying these products?  Of course you do.  TV Doctors say so.

Sundowner -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/8/2008 12:50:19 AM)

You are, as always, right Cali.

But it amuses (in a sort of cynical way) when so often an OP asks a question and posters ignore it and give their own view. It's how CM is supposed to work I guess. Having suffered it myself I then sympathise with the OPs.

Quite different from the OP who pitches in with a whine or a complaint or an attack. What fun is that; that's when the popcorn comes out.

But of course sensibly often (God this place is good) threads start out constructively and deteriorate into flaming. (You probably know that the mods have a range of dummy profiles which they are required to use to provoke these attack posts when things get too quiet, else CM would lose its distinct flavour).

Why am I saying this? The words eggs, sucking (but not grandmother) come to mind. Sorry Cal.

I am all for extending common courtesy, hell they can do whatever it is they like, afterall they are the ones that have to deal with the outcomes (both good and bad).  Hmmm, I may even be questioning whether or not chasing an online collar is a kink/fetish, and if it is does fall into one of those labels should it be something splattered across the boards?  I can think of a few kinks/fetishes that are not allowed to be talked about, hell I can think of a few behaviours that are shunned quite regularly around here; such as the hng trying to be domineering and ordering folks around in threads... Should we not also make an exception for those that wish to explore that part of their kink?  I do my best not to approach people in threads with disdain, I am not perfect, however sarcasm is something I will not take off the table, it is an integral part of who I am.

Ah and to your final question, my kink is currently sleeping at the foot of my bed, I would hope that if I allow her to post here she would be treated with the courtesy she is due (as a human) and called upon her mistakes and failings.

Just my thoughts,
Thadius

Guess that "qualifies me to answer ... so .....

What does a collar mean to you, is it some bauble to hand out to anyone who happens to catch your eye or who answers an email ? Does a collar mean anything more to you than a declaration of "hands off she's mine" ? To me it sounds like you barely have the first frigging clue what you want, what you need or even how to go about getting it never mind keeping it.

You came here asking for advice, well the previous posters have spelled out their advice and I have just one more piece to add ... Stop ignoring the advice you are given just because it doesn't fit with what you want to hear. When you ask for advice you are asking (supposedly) to gain others insights into thing, not for some validation of your own damn choices .... if you need someone to validate your choices, buy a glove puppet and learn ventriloquism and you'll always have the answer you want.

This is great advice. Works for subs lacking a current Master as well. I don't know what I would have done for all those lonely years without MR Spanky my glove puppet Dom.
Why spend all that time and heartbreak searching personal ads when all you need is an old sock and some buttons for eyes?
Sorry what was the OP question again?

Hi,

I am potentially considering Kaylana for my slave.  I would like to give her an OL collar first.  Is there any advise anyone can give me on how to do this.  I will be seeing her in 2 weeks in person.  But I would still would like to pursue an OL collar for her.

I am open to any advice,

Thank you.

My advice (for what it's worth) is don't waste Your time or hers with an online "collar"; there's no such thing. Wait till you see her in r/l and collar her for real.

dawntreader -> RE: Putting an OL collar on a slave (7/8/2008 5:48:07 AM)

i just want to say i really appreciate the recent posts that have come since my question.

Ownedgirlie, Sundowner and Cruel Desires thankyou for understanding what i was trying to say~

i am with you totally on the points you are making Cali and Dark Victory...100% seriously. But, if online BDSM is a kink, which i think there is enough evidence to show that, then should we be allowed to bash it like it has been done here on this thread - when we are not allowed to bash other kinks such as amputation, which was discussed and defended by some of our more established posters last week. Hell, i find less danger RedMagic in an online breakup than i do with the loss of an appendage.

Please understand, i am not defending Online slaves, master, dominants submissives, collars, brandings role-playing, or cybering. i am merely questioning whether we as a community have a right to bash a kink as has been done in this thread. Again, i am not referring to the OP himself just online, in general~

Good morning.

I as a rule extend to everyone at least that much respect. The respect of common courtesy. They all recieve that until they show me that they no longer deserve it . By their actions or their words or their behavior. Calling someone on their mistakes and failures is fine. When it crosses the line into disdain and belittlement is when I have issues with it. Rather then being caught up in that type of behavior, I just stay away from them and spend my time on more positive pursuits. I wish a few other posters on this board would extend some of the newcomers the same courtesy. It would make this forum a much less hostile place to visit in :-)

As always, your milage may vary.

Good day to everyone.

Before you worry about online collars... go get coffee with them as soon as you walk off the plane and make sure you didn't show up with unrealistic expectations.  It ain't a sanity dipstick but it'll do.
