I've only seen 'Inside the Criminal Mind' once or twice; tru.tv carries it but apparently it's only broadcast here late at night. The show's premise is that a forensic psycologist interviews a particular serial killer and explains where he or she falls on 'The Depravity Scale' the result of research into which behaviors the criminal justice system should consider 'depraved'.

Anyway, last Saturday's episode involved Joseph Paul Franklin, who is most famous for shooting and paralyzing Larry Flynt, publisher of 'Hustler' magazine.

I thought it was a fascinating tv show; I'd recommend anyone check to see when it's broadcast and give it a look-see.

If psychiatrists/psychologists were of any use they would make accurate predictions about people's behaviour.

They dont, so they aint

No one can predict human behavior because of free will. It is impossible to add individual nurturing and experience into the equation that would make a truly informed and accurate decision as to what someone would do or decide not to do (this reminds of the movie Minority Report, a truly creepy movie).

I expect you may be right. Not 100% sure about free will tho'.
It is possible that councilling helps people but that is true whoever offers the advice.

Psychiatrists/Psychologists make spectacular mistakes that show that their insights are really not that valuable.
eg recommending release of people who subsequently commit further serious, often sexually motivated, crimes.
Or when commenting on human behaviour in general they attach technical jargon to the seemingly trivial. Carnt think of an example lol
