candystripper -> Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 3:20:58 PM)

This is a 'little bitty' Op, about 'better smoking'.

Lately I'm smoking much more than normal, and I can ill afford it.  Part of why is that I've got a bad habit of lighting a cigarette and then 'forgetting it' until it's burnt itself out.  Since I never got my nicotine, I then light another..and sometimes the same damned thing happens.

This isn't a problem if I'm watching tv.  For some reason I can never get interested enough in tv, even a movie, to the point of distraction.  It happens when I'm driving or housekeeping or on the pc.

It seems I've also developed a bad habit of 'self-medicating' with cigarettes.  I'll smoke for 30 minutes or so before it finally dawns on me I haven't eaten all day and I'm not having a nicotine fit -- I'm hungry.  Or my pain pill wore off like 3 hours ago and I haven't been paying attention to how bad my body feels.

I don't think it's the pain pills -- they are strong, but I never get the feeling of being 'high' -- I wouldv'e already called the MD for a different script if that were happening.  They just cut the pain once I remember to take one.  (It's codeine, in case anyone's curious.)

I've always been a little inattentive but not to this extent.  Even if it's just to bring costs back down to normal, I need to 'fix' this if I can.

Any suggestions?

(That was not an invite to post 'smoking is evil', LOL.)

Time them, try setting an egg timer or alarm to schedule your own cig breaks.
Realize when you light up, for me it is things like stoplights and morning coffee. Once you see the connection see if you can eliminate that activity. (not stoplights, those are pretty unavoidable but the coffee example.. switch to tea)
Brush your teeth between breaks.
Reading the minor confusion with your pain meds you may want to schedule those as well, I've found it makes it easier to track them but also I feel better keeping it all chemically balanced.

Ty camille; very good ideas.  I wish my sound was working on my pc; I think Yahoo calendar has an alarm function.  I'll look for an egg timer though -- they're pretty cheap.

I think the idea about brushing my teeth is a good one too.  I'm home -- I could brush them 100xs a day if I chose to.

Just to clarify; I'm not tying to reduce my smoking 'in fact'; I'm just trying to stop wasting them so much.  Maybe someday I'll attempt to stop smoking again, but not now, and the Op isn't seeking ideas for quitting.

What the heck does 'wasting cigarettes' mean? [8|]
I had thought you were trying to cut down, or control your smoking?

Thadius -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 4:10:42 PM)

Perhaps try only smoking when you are up and moving, instead of lighting up while you are at the pc.  This will have 2 benefits, first you will be focused on the task at hand. Second, if you are in a hurry to get back to the pc, you will either smoke half of the cigarette (not wasting it) or you will finish the entire thing.

Just some quick thoughts.

daddysliloneds -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 4:17:58 PM)

do what i do; only smoke outside while sitting in a chair next to a table and ashtray...

that will curb your habit real quick and save you a ton of money while preventing you from burning down your own house.

MizSexyVixen -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 4:18:26 PM)

All good advice...also, go outside to smoke.

snappykappy -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 4:20:10 PM)

Maybe it's just me but...having had an affinity for Vic's in the past...I'm saying your issue is the Vic's.

atursvcMaam -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 5:25:20 PM)

If i am trying to cut down, or if i tend to leave cigarettes burning themselves out, i put my cigarettes in another place than normal (my shirt pocket) and keep life savers, tic-tacs, butterscotch, peppermint or something like that in that spot.  Sometimes i go and find the cigarettes, other times i just take the candy.  i also hide my lighter or matches, but that was part of a quit effort.
only smoke outside also works pretty well, it not only makes it harder to smoke, but takes the smell of smoke out of the house, so you tend not to think about it so much.  Some of these are steps that would lead to quitting, but some will work as a distraction, and ability to cut down.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 6:29:15 PM)

I use those snuffers in ashtrays.  A lot of the time, I will only smoke half a cigarette.  I'll put it out in the snuffer, and smoke the other half later.

No camille, sorry if I was unclear.

I tend to 'waste' cigarettes by lighting them then laying them in the ashtray and allowing them to burn down without taking another drag.

Laffs. But then, how will I ever get to play out my 'firefighter' fantasy?

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not the pain meds, Gris, but it wouldn't hurt to double-check.  Thanks.

Sounds promising, but what's a 'snuffer'?

Well, as it happens I don't want any of that stuff, faerytattoodgirl.

I love smoking.  It's the only substance I've ever 'abused' and I have no other vices.  I know this will make some peoples' head spin 'round, but I don't want to quit.

Eventually I might, but not today.

Then think of your perfect Dom coming along-and rejecting you because you have a repulsive habit.

candystripper -> RE: Advice from Other Smokers, Please (6/27/2008 7:01:56 PM)

Laffs.  Leatherist, my 'perfect Dom' is not an extremist of any sort, and likely smokes Himself.

It's a little thing with a hole in it that you stick a burning cigarette in.  I can't believe you don't know what it is.  Here's a website that sells them:

http://www.cigarettesnuffer.com/

You can buy them for less than dollar at most tobacco shops.
