When I was younger, I had a couple very long term friends that I eventually fell in love with, and it hurt because I could not be with them. Now i am at a stage in my life where if i had a friend for a while, i actually could see them! Maybe I have money for bus tickets, maybe I would feel like trying out a new city. I guess what goes through my head when I contact a submissive that lives a long ways a way is "why not? What's the downside to getting to know someone far away when it actually might not be a stretch of the imagination that i would meet them someday?" Now it might just be because I live in a little state with not much a a community, and even if I wanted to be more involved with the community I have seen, I have problems with social anxiety, but I have no problem seeing if I am compatible with someone who lives a ways away. If they have "willing to relocate" marked off. Maybe having a distance one's willing to relocate feature would get rid of some of the confusion people have? Though I would guess that some people like to fantasize and will ask you to move in a few emails later regardless of whatever high tech capabilities the wonderful programmers at CM give us.
