Rain...this sounds more like a thyroid issue

No, with my health issues this year and the cancer scare, my thyroid was checked several times and it's fine. Admittedly, the doctor didn't understand how I could handle the pain I was going through without pain meds but I left them for only when necessary. I also went through childbirth without any anasthesia. Told them to fuck off when they kept offering an epidural "because all the other women were having one". I know, sick of me..... [:D]

i am strange (oh shud UP Pots!) with pain meds too. THey hit me like speed.

VBPiercedGal -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (6/30/2008 2:29:03 PM)

Yet another natural redhead chiming in!

I have a very high tolerance for most kinds of pain. Cane my bottom till it's black, pull my hair until my neck contortions look like something a cat does, etc... But if I get period cramps, I'm a huge crybaby, eating fistfuls of every OTC painkiller I can find, often cocktails of aspirin, ibuprofen, tylenol, AND Aleve. And as other studies have suggested, whether due to my hair color or my high school career being filled with illicit drug use, I do require huge doses of Rx pain meds and anesthesia. Fortunately, my docs are all well versed in my needs as an individual and understand that it's okay to give me a two month supply of Vicodin when another patient may turn into a junkie with one.

Now who was playing connect the dots with freckles? I have 38 years worth on nearly every inch of skin. I'm sure there's a constellation in there somewhere!

Master96, wouldn't it always be your responsibility to monitor your submissive in play, to be sure she's okay and you haven't done any physical or emotional damage?  Safewords are okay, but some women may zone out or be too willing to submit to use them.

Why would the color of a woman's hair make you more vigilant -- unless you feel you need to increase your vigilance anyway?

Y'all got me wondering now..... I have an incredibly high tolerance to pain meds and anasthesia but I was told it was family history though no one else has the tolerance. I can still be up and functioning on enough meds to knock out an elephant. Hmmmmm, kinda wish there were more studies. [sm=book.gif]

I'm exactly the same way. Doctors actually get scared by how much they have to give me. For surgery my anesthesiologist told me that redheads do sometimes require more anesthesia and that they really do prepare for it when they see redhair coming in the door...but he told me that the amount they ended up having to give me was just ridiculous. When they had me do that count backwards thing I got to 64 before I don't remember what came next....lol. They said I wouldn't make it to 95. Dentists have given up on me....those numbing shots have no effect whatsoever (even after 12 of them) and the gas doesn't do a thing either.

Cold meds though are completely different. They wind me up like a 3 day clock. I will sometimes take a half dose of Benadryl for a cat allergy I have and it just makes me zing!!!! I guess most people have the opposite effect.

The article says the outcome was based on two studies, and that neither study was a replication of the other. Not enough to show causal effects. It also goes on to talk about gene pathology, different genes coding for the proteins to express red hair and tolerances to pain, effects of medications, etc., ... so ... redheads, it seems, respond pretty much like anyone else to anything: individually.

~shrug~

Where do scientists come up with these wacked theories?

Why would any government agency or private funding source fund research like this?

This bullsh*t annoys me; study a cure of herpes or for cancer or for diabetes, for Christ's sake.

Even scientists are sometimes dimwits.

gee....maybe these wacked theories from dimwit scientists  might one day result in science having the ability to duplicate the high pain tolorance in redheads and make life easier for those who endure chronic pain on a daily basis...

They're only whacked in your own perception. There could be many implications for discovering the gene to pain-tolerance or medication-tolerance, regardless of whatever focus group it came out of. In the past, many discoveries were made from "wacked theories", including modern antibiotics, pain relievers, treatments and surgery. Any particular reason why you're slamming a particular group of people when the fact is that all medical research starts in small groups and expands to help many people? Why have such an issue that a very few, rare studies focused on redheads? And funding is determined on different criteria, whether it's governmental or private funding. Obviously there was grounds to fund these studies, whether they got the results they were looking for or not.

There is research and study going on for herpes, cancer and diabetes, however those are not the end all and be all of modern medicine.

spot on, LadyRainfire.  this slave is most grateful that alternative therapies to chronic pain issues are becoming more widely known due to research into chronic pain and "wacked-out" theories.

it helps the average MD to be more helpful, if he has more tools in his tool-box to help you with...and researching what works, or doesn't, helps that process along greatly.

the difference in going to the dentist today, compared to 30 years ago, is like night and day.  they have done much research on "Dental Phobia" and even have a clinic for it at UCLA, which this slave has attended.

she learned her phobia stemmed from the excrutiating pain issues she experienced from a life filled with frequent visits to dentists who were not using the correct amount of anesthesia.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (6/30/2008 7:43:24 PM)

A dear friend has woken up repeatedly in mid-surgery and the doctors blamed her weight, rather than her colouring....  but she does have a low pain tolerance for all kinds of pain.  I think there's something to the idea since red hair is a recessive gene, right, and probably comes with other chromosomal goodies that are worth investigating.

beth, I am so glad that your dentists are good ones, now!  After major facial reconstructions, I have no fear of dentists, but a lot of respect for just how many nerve endings are in the human face!

EmanonFitz -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (7/11/2008 2:42:57 AM)

I worked in surgery for 20+ years. Though there are no studies on it that I know of, and it is only the anesthesiologists and anesthetists I worked with. They all said that redheads (race didn't matter) on the whole have more allergies, take more anesthesia, are harder than any other group or race to put under and bring out, and often wake-up fighting - throwing punches. And the buggers drew lots to see who would have to do my surgeries four times.  But that might have something to do my first surgery-I broke a nose when I was waking up. Oops.

Yaknow...theres myths about redheads, and blondes,....but none about burnettes or raven haired people ...I wonder why that is?

bornsynner -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (7/12/2008 8:42:46 PM)

yet another born red-head here.. and although i can readily accept and handle supposedly massive amounts of pain, when i do buckle and decide to go for medicinal help it takes a big quantity of drugs to do the trick.. ive woke up during surgery twice and once more about an hr before they were ready for me to... even when warned by me that i might take more than the average person to put under or keep under, most have just poo-pooed my opinions only to find that, lo and behold, i knew my own body after all..

because there are too many brunettes and raven haired people around to dispel the myths.  besides, has anyone with brown or black hair ever been tortured or murdered BECAUSE of their hair color?

natural blondes and redheads are extremely rare.  less than 2% of the general population has red hair...and there have been times in history where folks having red hair met dire consequences.

At St. Paul’s cathedral in London, figurines tell the story of the fall in the Garden of Eden. Adam points one hand to the forbidden fruit and the other to a golden haired Eve. Then the arch angel drives them from the garden. Adam with his fig leaf loops his arm around Eve who is now cowering and sporting a main of long red hair.

Similarly in the paintings of the Sistine Chapel in 1874, Michelangelo’s Temptation depicts a brown haired Eve being handed a red apple by a red headed bare breasted serpent woman (Satan manifested as woman of course carries red hair). In the adjacent fresco Eve is thrown out of the garden with a shameful face and a twist of red hair.

Eves’ red hair is seen as the stain of sin like the original scarlet letter. Later her son, Cain, will bare the red hair and also a fall from grace.

Belief that redheads are witches is a folk belief in Germanic culture. From 1483-1784 thousands of suspected witches were nearly always stripped and searched for “marks of the devil”. These included any “abnormality” such as freckles, moles, warts, and birthmarks. Red hair was certainly considered an abnormality.

Considering the freckle factor for redheads this was a deadly and shocking horror. Somewhere around 45,000 women were tortured and murdered usually by burning at the stake or by drowning.

In central Africa’s Cameroon redheaded albinos, called Nguenguerous, are believed also to come by this color by menstrual intercourse. The UN and other world organizations have studied and advocated for their rights as there have been allegations of the ritual murders in some regions of Africa.

[:D]  Guess this means that I would be on the fires tonight..... Ya can play connect the dots on my freckles alone, not to mention my moles.

stilettos1988 -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (9/22/2008 10:57:20 AM)

I'm a Redhead and I'm exactly the same way

PrincessJ77 -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (9/22/2008 2:29:01 PM)

I'm red also, and bruise ever so quickly.  Pain wise... well I can't handle much (whistling innocently) and my ass has only bested 1 crop and 1 paddle.

DesFIP -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (9/22/2008 6:18:56 PM)

I was auburn when young, went black later on. Perhaps that's why the dentist knows I frequently require extra novacaine.

VivaciousSub -> RE: Redheads and pain.... (9/22/2008 7:36:33 PM)

I'm a natural redhead that has a massively high pain tolerance. I also need like 60 bazillion shots of Novocaine at the dentist, gas needs to be cranked up to "ridonkulous", and yes I've woken up during surgery before!

Oddly though, I don't burn in the sun. I turn an olive gold color instead. Score one for me! My dominant Irish heritage is tempered with a lot of Italian and Croatian. Otherwise, I'd be like my mother and burst into flames upon entering sunlight.
