Clark's comment's were unneeded. McCain's military service was honorable and commanding a squadron whether in peace time or war still involves being a decision maker with regards to the lives of dozens of people.

Lieberman continued his rather disgusting policy of telling lies in support of McCain.

McCain is a war hero.  The comments are un-grateful and an insult.

The man wants to be our next president, pahunkboy.  We already know he intends to persist in fighting in the Middle East until the Wars are 'won'.  Yes, I appreciate his military service and his suffering a a POW, and yes, I've heard he handled his imprisionment with great dignity and patriotism.

However, as a presidential candidate who openly advocates war, I want to know what exactly are his qualifications to serve as Commander in Chief.  Up till now, it seemed no one was willing to ask this question out of 'reverence' for the man.

Well, to me, he's no different than any other candidate; he deserves to be discussed and factoids about his qualifications should be freely available.  The fact that he was a POW does not change this.

I find nothing insulting in asking or telling such facts.

Wesley Clark is a joke. He's lucky he didnt turn the Kosovo war into a world war when he nearly ordered the bombing of a Serbian airport that was occupied by Russian troops. Thank god a British general talked some sense into him.

Owner59 -> RE: General Wesley Clark takes a swipe at McCain (6/29/2008 1:10:11 PM)

Does this mean we can bring up Tricky Dick, the GOP`s own Sen.Joe McCarthy and selling arms to the axis-o-evil/terrorist state of Iran?

How about something more recent, like "Scooter" Libby and homegrown/white house espionage and treason?

Will you bring up Ted Kennidy when that stuff gets hashed out next year?

Yer gonna needa` bigr` boat.....

The articles of impeachment voted against Bill Clinton were for perjury and obstruction of justice.  To argue otherwise is to ignore the Congressional record.

Tal Thadius, and if your memory serves you correctly, you are also going to remember a man whos father laid out the red carpet for him on the republican side, actually, you are going to remember a few.

And your point is that any fucking one of these are your average sort of everyday workaday individuals?  Or that there wasn't spin in alotta peoples cases, and that old Drunk Teddy is the only one of our staltwart companions who have had this sort of free ride?

McCain's military record and Senatorial record are a matter of public record.

Perhaps no one is asking the question because it has already been answered in abundance?

Tal Ron,

Actually, I have no issue about talking about the frat boy junkie that had the world laid at his feet, or the many others on both sides.  I was just emphasising for the balancing of weight, since the see-saw seemed to be swayed heavily in one direction over the other.  Your post just happened to have the usual wit and a few examples that worked nicely.

As always,
Thadius

I thought both sides promised there wouldn't be any negative campaigning.

Gen. Wesley Clark, acting as a surrogate for Barack Obama’s campaign, invoked John McCain’s military service against him in one of the more personal attacks on the Republican presidential nominee this election cycle.

Clark said that McCain lacked the executive experience necessary to be president, calling him “untested and untried” on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” And in saying so, he took a few swipes at McCain’s military service.

“He has been a voice on the Senate Armed Services Committee. And he has traveled all over the world. But he hasn't held executive responsibility. That large squadron in the Navy that he commanded — that wasn't a wartime squadron,” Clark said.

“I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.”

Could Clark be the VP for Obama?

The events of Pristina airfield in June of 1999 are a matter of historical record, including British General Mike Jackson's refusal to comply with Clark's orders, as well American Admiral James Ellis' similar decision.

Lieberman puzzles me [8|] I don't have any evidence to back this up, but I've always gotten the impression that he feels let down by his Dem buddies, hence the distancing between them.

His former Dem buddies are mighty pissed at him for his hypocrisy. When he ran for VP he rather famously refused to campaign on the Sabbath and people at the time respected his religious stance on the subject. However since then he has campaigned and done other 'work' on the Sabbath. It doesn't get a lot of mainstream press but I know it is and was a big deal in the progressive blogosphere. It's a big part of the reason the Democratic leadership started cutting ties with him.

I doubt the Democratic Party's Executive Committee is posting to a 'blogosphere'.

Lierberman was an ineresting candidate with something to say.  No matter what the Party claims now, IMO they failed to back him out of fear that anti-semiticism would prevent him from ever being a viable candidate.

Now that Obama has the nod, perhaps this fear will fade and party leadership will reconsider backing Lierberman in 2012.

Lam, I really don't believe that to be true, I believe they said that they abhorred negative campaigns and that they did not want to engage in negative campaigning. And they BOTH pleaded in public that there is no sort of negative campaigning going on.....

They both got some rough edges, and want to lay low.

527 money will walk the dog, it is just a fact of life, you know it, I know it, only people involved in sucking off random dicks thru stall walls are going to be surprised,............like Boy George...........

What is known is that perjury and obstruction of justice were the articles of impeachment voted against Bill Clinton.

What is known is that Bill Clinton was acquitted by Senate.

Was it wise or prudent to vote the articles of impeachment?  Probably not--certainly there was a great deal of partisan politics on both sides of that debate.  However, as I said before, to argue that Bill Clinton was impeached for anything besides perjury and obstruction of justice is to ignore the Congressional record on the matter.

NumberSix -> RE: General Wesley Clark takes a swipe at McCain (6/29/2008 2:01:45 PM)

And of course, to be branded by a 'senator' as lying is something that I think, keeps us all up at night and twists up our panties in MANDELBROT SETS.  My opinion, those of you who think that your congress means something useful could have a different outlook.

bipolarber -> RE: General Wesley Clark takes a swipe at McCain (6/29/2008 2:24:25 PM)

So, Clark took a swipe at McCain... (gasp! horrors!)

Remind me again, during the run up to the quagmire, which of the senators(Congressmen?) did the Bush administration swift boat mercilessly? You know, the guy who was the Nam vet who had lost limbs in that war?

Anyone? Anyone? Buller?

Don't pull that "McCain's record is above reproach" crap. This is an election. The independant action committies (but mostly on the GOP side) are going to drag both candidates through the fucking fires of hell before we hit November. And as we all know, the GOP saves it's best lies and half truths for October...

Personally, I don't like seeing ANYONE using a military record as a negative... but, some people deserve to have it looked at more closely. Like Bush I's bailout under questionable circumstances, and Bush II going AWOL after getting a cushy deferment to the National Gaurd... (Thanks for the phone call, Poppy Bush!)

Lordandmaster -> RE: General Wesley Clark takes a swipe at McCain (6/30/2008 4:35:26 PM)

For the record, Obama has disavowed Clark's comment.

Which qualifies him to be President how?

Clark was spot-on.

Anyone remember the media black out on Kennedy's qualifications as Commander in Chief?

After writing 'Profiles in Courage', Kennedy was awarded the Pulitizer Prize in 1957.

quote:

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) graduated from Harvard with honors in 1940 and served as a P. T. Boat Commander in the South Pacific during World War II. He was decorated twice by the Navy for the serious injuries he suffered when his boat was rammed in two while attacking a Japanese destroyer in the Solomons, and for "his courage, endurance and excellent leadership" in towing injured members of his crew to safety.

How the hell does getting your boat rammed quaify anyone to serve as Commander in Chief?

It seems to me we have the same attitude now towards McCain; he suffered -- ergo -- we can't examine his qualifications.

P.S. Lam, the oldest campaign trick I know of is to allow a friend to make nasty remarks about the opposition candiate then distance yourself by disavowing his remarks.

My Insurance Commissioner allowed one of his friends to release a copy of his opponent's credit report -- complete with info on the checks he'd bounced -- to be released to the press.  He then 'disavowed' this invasion of the opposition's privacy.

But he wasn't above remarking that if you couldn't balance your checkbook you might not be qualified for office -- and it won him the election.
