Hi folks--

There's a new release (part of a series) of a report covering the Army's post-war Iraqi operations.  It's titled   “On Point II: Transition to the New Campaign.” and there's a review of it in the NYTimes here.

"...the “On Point” report carries the imprimatur of the Army’s Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth. The study is based on 200 interviews conducted by military historians and includes long quotations from active or recently retired officers."

You can download a copy from the Army on June 30.

The bulk is from Carlyle Pa, the war college, but upon reflection, not only is Ft. Leavenworth a prison, it also has a war college.

I am slightly surprised to see such straightforward and unequivocable discussion coming from active duty officers.

On the other hand, I always knew my Army was filled with decent chaps.

FR:

The pdf version is already available for download.

But it's over 100 megabytes!

Damn, someone needs to instruct them how to reduce the file size of a pdf!

lol... Fort Leavenworth isn't a prison.  It's the Army's best kept secret as far as duty stations.  But, yes... the maximum security facility, the United States Disciplinary Barracks is located there... though not in the same place as it was when I worked in it.

Also, The Command and General Staff College (CGSC) isn't precisely a "war college".  Actually there's quite a few schools that are a part of the CGSC and it is, as I understand it, the primary Army conference location.  When I was stationed there, it was explained to me that pretty much anything happening in the Army today was planned 5 years ago at Leavenworth.

And I can believe it.  I had chauffeur duty there once... myself and a couple of dozen other lowly enlisted spent a week shuttling muckety-mucks from KCI.   That's not a typical duty to get pulled for like guard duty or CQ.  Anyway, we had to have commissioned officer escorts with us as the Generals couldn't be expected to converse with a piddling PFC on the hour long drive from and to the airport.

I've not looked at the report that Firm downloaded, but I suspect that a good portion was provided by the Combat Studies Institute (CSI).  The CSI is a military history 'think tank' which produces timely and relevant military history research publications and contemporary operational history for the U.S. Army. CSI also conducts battlefield staff rides and provides other types of educational and historical support to Army units and commands upon request.
