I'm considering going to a munch. I would be interested to hear your experiences, if you'd like to share. I'm a little...unclear...on what to expect. I understand it's not a place for a scene, but past that, I just don't know really what to expect. (And...um...why is it called a munch?- just curious, because of course, when I say that people raise their eyebrows and wonder if I'm going to a brunch to be ravaged or something.)

You'll probably get a lot of varied answers here. Some people have had horrible, rotten, awful times at munches and others have had great ones. I haven't really attended a proper munch as of yet, but I've heard positive things about the local ones. I'd advise having your own transport so you can leave if you are uncomfortable. Also, remember that just because one group doesn't mesh with you doesn't mean there never will be one. You have to try a few different groups before you find one you are comfortable with, or you may not find one in your area but will in a different one.

Well, we travel a lot and have been to munches in several states. They are all more or less similar from our experience. We find out where the people are sitting, order food, and get to know each other. The chat may or may not be about D/s issues. The chat is just as likely to be about vacations, work, UMs as it is to be about kinky stuff. We are very occasionally invited to a play party after the munch if it's a weekend, but we don't expect that since we're just passing through.

I agree with Aquatic that different groups are different. I didn't have a single 100% positive experience with a local scene until my recent trip to Orlando. I would suggest you judge the strength of the group by considering this: did the "old-timers" make you, the newbie, warmly welcome without hitting on you? If you get the vibe that you're not welcome, there's probably some high school politics going on. And if you get the "Hey! Fresh meat!" vibe -- well, just realize that not everywhere is like that.

what to expect ? hummm do not expect anything have no expectations , no agenda just be yourself and take it all in and enjoy it . I could tell you what has happened to me and others yet will it happen to you or be the same naww prob not . observe and take it in , and enjoy it .

The group I belong to never uses the term 'munch'; they simply say 'dinner' to be followed by a 'play party' or trip to the 'dungeon'. I've heard it before of course and like you, I'd want to know what to expect, especially if you're planning to attend alone. I'd suggest you drive yourself there, even if a group member has been 'appointed' to escort you for the evening, so you can depart at will if you begin to feel uncomfortable. If the group has an Executive Committee you can contact, maybe they can address your questions -- after all you want to know what to expect at the actual event you plan to attend, not survey all 'munches' nationwide. Just don't forget, the person ultimately responsible for your safety, comfort and well-being is you -- always you. Don't leave your common sense at the door. candystripper
