Do you try and keep your mind sharp?  Do you try and learn new things?

Here are some possible answers:

* Yes, I'm in school and sometimes I take a course because the subject matter piques my interest even if it's not in my major.

* I have no interest in school but I like to read the better newspapers; e.g., the New York Times.

* I have no interest in learning about any subject other than D/s, but I do read/surf the 'net/etc. looking for new aspects of it.

* I have learned nothing new lately and am turning into a mental turnip.

Do you believe in 'use it or lose it'?

well i hope i'm learning anyway or the past five years have been a complete waste of time not to mention close to 75k overall. and i'm learning about myself so i say yes on that end. i hope someone shoots me and puts me out of my misery if i ever reach a point where i'm not learning something even if it's a better way to knit air cables.

for example i just learned that bondage porn makes up 5.1% of porn downloads each year.

actually it's higher than some of the other data that i've come across. i'm surprised that it's as high as that. i haven't read all the article yet, it may depend on what sample they're using. shrug. i tend to be on the boards the most when i'm working on a paper so i run into these factoids a lot.

I'm about to start a masters course, I read journals for fields I don't study just because it's nice to know about them, if something is ineteresting I'll find out about it in excruciating detail, I fly through a couple of books a week, and read a few papers most days. I like to think I'm still making use of my brain.

I’m two months away from obtaining my associates degree.   woooo hoooo i can finally see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
Use it or lose it?  To some extent I think that’s true.  I guess it depends on what we’re talking about.

I think it's about doing something new ... is alll that is required .. to not get into a routine rut.  It can be academic, it can be physical, just walking around the block in the other direction to get a different persepective on a familiar subject.  So yes use your mind or i don't think you'll lose it ... but it will go stale.

I think the more you know, the more you find out you didn't know, and that makes me want to know more to keep me from being the stale nitwit that I am.  With each new thing I learn, my viewpoint is broadened.  And as they say, "a mind stretched to new ideas, never returns to its original dimensions."  ...That was after a Food Technology course I took in college, the one thing I remember from that course was that "irradiating strawberries does not make them radioactive."  LOL  I will never look at irradiated strawberries the same way again.  That is, if I ever run into one... *eye roll*

Nope, not in school anymore.  I learn stuff on my own, bought some CDs to learn spanish, going to take some advanced swing, and learning a lot about how fucked up politics is just by tuning into C-SPAN or Fox News (especially).  But who knows what the future holds.

Talking about what we're "learning" would be considered "Broadcasting" what's happening in RL, doncha think?

"Why the need to 'broadcast' anything happening (allegedly) in real life"?

sub4hire -> RE: Are You Learning? (7/1/2008 7:55:52 AM)

I have an advanced degree, yes life bores me at times.  Even when it is most stressful.  I'm always taking new courses...no idea how many credits I'd have if you wrapped it all together at this point.

Always reading and trying to learn new things.  Even if that means striking up a conversation with a stranger.
Since moving to the midwest I want to know what makes a farmer tick...etc.  So, been asking strange farmers all about everything they do.
Politics, even though it is out of our hands.  I know everything about every candidate who ran....that was a waste but a learning experience never the less.
Learning how small towns think so I can learn to manipulate them on a widespread basis.  hehe.

Anyway, so the easy to your answer is yes I learn everyday.  Yes, I also believe if you don't use it you lose it.  I've lost some of the stuff I learned in college already, just from lack of use.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Are You Learning? (7/1/2008 10:07:08 AM)

I spent two years taking german at the Goethe Institute in 2001 and 2002 to prepare myself for an amazing month in Munich in 2003. In fact, I email my ex-"landlady" over there to help keep in practice; I write in English, she writes in German. She has a two-year old daughter I need to visit.

I also read about science, and have been reviewing my chemistry with textbooks from eBay. I also read my Am. Horticultural Soc. Encyclopedia. My mind is in pretty good shape. My head is another thing entirely.[8D]

kittinSol -> RE: Are You Learning? (7/1/2008 10:15:22 AM)

If my mind were any sharper, it would cut through the brain matter, so I deliberately cultivate shallowness and superficiality in a fruitless attempt at eroding the incisive quality of my intellect.
