Those whose homes were searched, though, grumbled about a peculiar change in what they understood — mainly from television — to be the law.

They said the agent, a man some had come to know as “Sergeant Bill,” boasted that he did not need search warrants to enter their homes because he worked for the federal government.

But after a reporter for the local weekly newspaper made a few calls about that claim, Gerald’s antidrug campaign abruptly fell apart after less than five months. Sergeant Bill, it turned out, was no federal agent, but Bill A. Jakob, an unemployed former trucking company owner, a former security guard, a former wedding minister and a former small-town cop from 23 miles down the road.
Mr. Jakob, 36, is now the subject of a criminal investigation by federal authorities, and he is likely to face charges related to impersonating a law enforcement officer, his lawyer said.

If he had been a cop he would have been a bumbling idiot. That alone should have been a tip off that he was getting things accomplished.
I watched one of our local detectives ruin all chances of a prosecution by bumbling all the evidence in a murder.
From asking others (complete strangers) to handle blood evidence for him. Process evidence...etc.

Small town America is not ready for real crime. I guess they'd have to call the FBI in if something real were to happen here.
Sustained crime would have a field day here.

Vigilante justice is the way I've done things in the past. Although it doesn't make it right either.

I agree with Gloria. Small towns are not ready. Daily I put on my crime watch gear and bike around town. Budget cuts almost zapped the police force.

Even tho about 100 are part of crime watch, only 3 or 4 actually get out ---

we put alot of local boys in jail for non-violent or trivial crime.... which isnt why i am concerned-- but the gangs are trying to come in. hopefully they will move on to easier pickings....

Personally I would prefer Federal Law allowing any citizen to shoot to kill any meth lab operators as well as any drug dealer. Take it a step further...give me the fucking Grim Reaper cloak and scythe...there is a lot to clean up and I would be very happy to assist.

However the guy was a real dufus...but why did people cheer for Charles Bronson in Vigilante. Because something needs to be done.There comes a point where drug dealers and addicts (of all levels and perspective) will outnumber functional people. I prefer to be the healthy dog and not be consumed by the fleas and ticks of lies misery and deceit.

He's not a vigilante, he's an idiot. Cop wannabes are common. I've met guys like that. They go out and buy Ford Crown Victorias or old Chevy Caprices, and they buy scanners, lights, blah, blah, blah. Police equipment, badges, etc are not hard to get. You can order the stuff out of the backs of magazines or on the internet.

Guys like this are fucking losers; they are pathetic. How much of a loser is someone that they have to pretend to be a smalltown cop? It's not like the job is hard to get. A GED, a fairly clean criminal record, and passing the civil service exam is enough in most places. People that pretend to be cops, are the same kind of people that pretend to be war heroes. They want attention; they are little boys that never grew up. They are also dangerous; this guy is lucky he didn't try to serve a warrant on someone that knew the law. He's lucky he didn't get killed or get someone else killed. I hope he gets the book thrown at him and spends many years in the Federal pen.

This guy risked the lives of everyone so he could "play" G-Man, do they still call it that? I guess I'm giving away my age.

Oh Well, at least no one got hurt, It should be interesting to see how long it takes the town to go broke once all the lawsuits start being filed.

It probably never occured to you that there is crime associated with drugs because drugs are illegal, did it?

Now, back in the day, we all knew "speed kills" and the message got through. It was the bikers in Cali who were making and dealing that shit. This recent upsurge in usage amongst white rural Amis is mostly due to substitution - as other drugs became too expensive (MJ, for example) users substituted meth. Want to cut down on meth use? Legalize MJ.

Slaveboy. I couldnt agree more. We have the same thing in the volunteer fire dept / emergency squad... We call them "Scanner Frogs" because as soon as the scanner goes off they LEAP to action. We had this one guy, his first name was Roger, who would sometimes beat us to the calls. The fucker was NOT a member of the dept. He applied every month and every month we voted him down. Nonetheless, every fucking article of clothing the little fucker had was emblazoned with either a star of life or a malteese cross. (INCLUDING HIS UNDERPANTS! When he finally got arrested the cops who strip searched him during booking told us he had EMT underpants on!) We couldnt do anything about him when he was a simple "good samaratin" but thank god one day the little head case went too far and we arrived to find him on the scene wearing a T shirt that said "PARAMEDIC" on the back. He had his own jump kit, an oxygen tank, and a Lifepak 5 MANUAL defibrillator ! (A semiautomatic would have been bad enough, but at least that wont charge unless the computer decides its shockable, but the only thing stopping a person from using a manual defib is the judgement of the user - which is why only EMT Intermediates and Paramedics are allowed to use the manual ones or to posess the over ride cards for the automatics that are usable by cops, firemen, lifeguards, basic EMTs, school teachers, flight attendants, etc...

Well thank GOD the little asshole finally went too far - the oxygen and the defibrillator are prescription devices, and the paramedic shirt was "impersonating a person of trust" so little roger went away... He could very easily have killed someone! What if he gave high flow oxygen to a COPD patient and knocked out their hypoxic drive, or what if he shocked a "funny looking" but innocuous rhythm like atrial fibrillation or Mobitz. You know shitheads like that really violate the public trust and are a menace to society. When your loved one is in distress, and you call 911, most people dont think to ask the guy who shows up in a star of life baseball cap with a PARAMEDIC t-shirt with a trauma kit, oxygen tank, and cardiac monitor / defibrillator if he actually knows how to use that stuff of if hes just a mental case who spent a few hundred on Ebay. I think impersonating a firefighter, ems worker, or cop should be handled way more seriously than it is. For example I would pass a law saying you get three shots a year at being a good samaratin - beyond that, you are "call jumping" and hence impersonating.... I also think the sale of any patches, shirts, badges, insignia, decals, etc should be restricted to those who can produce proper credentials. When I flew for the air ambulance service, my wife wanted one of the jackets and I wouldnt let her have it because I didbt want her being mistaken for a flight nurse or flight paramedic in the event of an emergency...

People like Roger or that "pretend cop" should be sent to prison, beaten by the guards daily, then lobotomized before release... On an amusing side note though, once Roger got out he decided he likes the justice system more than the fire service or EMS so he is now "on patrol" rooting out crime wherever he finds it. You called it perfectly, he has a Crown Vic with a spotlight, a brush guard, an amber light bar, etc... I wonder if this asshole started out as an EMS / Fire junkie or if he went right over to law enforcement LOL

Yep DA, I know guys like Roger. A couple of my buddies were on a volunteer fire department. A guy in their department was always mysteriously the first to show up at some fires. He'd be suited up and ready to go when the first truck pulled up. It turned out the guy was setting the fires, and calling them in anonymously.

Another guy I used to know was always hanging out at this convenience store I frequent down the road from me. Everytime I came in there, this guy was standing there with his security guard uniform on. He didn't work there. He was also a volunteer fire fighter, so he had his car decked out with a light bar, flashing lights in the grill, rear flashers in the window, and a push bumper. He drove an old, beat up Caprice that he bought at a police auction. The damn car wasn't worth more than a a thousand bucks, but he had a Streethawk lightbar on the thing. It was in the mid 90's, and those lightbars sold for close to a thousand back then. He must have spent two months of his wages decking that car out. He had tried to become a reserve deputy here, but they turned him down. I think he took the civil service exam 4 or 5 times trying to get hired with the city PD. He failed it, and you have to be a complete moron to fail a civil service exam.

Well I put an end to his little fantasy. I was driving home one day from work, and he spotted me. He thought it would be cute to wail his siren behind me. The first thing I did when I got home was call the chief of the VFD he was a member at. I told him what happened, and I told him my concerns based on seeing him all the time. He said they had been watching him and looking for a reason to get rid of him. So they kicked him off the department. He took the red lenses off and replaced them with.......you'll never guess.....AMBER ones! LOL. Since he was a security guard, he could have a Amber light bar. But I think the security company he worked for got sick of his shit and fired him. I haven't seen him around in a few years.

While in the Navy I literally put my life on the line every day, whether in war or peace, to protect and defend the American way of life.

As a civilian I took the time and effort to join the volunteer fire dept and to take the EMT and Paramedic courses. I draw no compensation for that beyond a baseball cap, a jacket, a couple of T-Shirts, and dinner once a month. The benefit to me is that I get to wake up at 3am to go crawl around in burning houses, to see dead kids in a wrecked car, or to go stick needles in fat sweating obese people who ate themselves into a myocardial infarction on greasy disgusting cholestoral soaked french food.... I am also registered with the Dept of Homeland Security as a member of a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) which will beactiated in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist act.

I volunteer with several youth oriented programs, including one that gives free flying lessons to unmotivated but intelligent highschool kids so as to keep them in school and to get them to excel in math and science and another that flies sick kids, or their familes, to distant medical treatment at no cost to them.

I belong to one civic organization that works to eradicate polio, another that provides medical assistance and nursing care as well as child identification services, yet another that provides FREE othopedic and burn care to children via a network of world reknowned hospitals.

I wont even get into what I contribute financial support to - suffice it to say everything from the MDA telethon to the Tailhook Educational Foundation to the Navy Leaguge....

Now that we have estibilshed MY contribution to American society... Since you have chosen to join us here in the Greatest nation on earth - I bid you welcome and would like to remind you "Ask not what my country can do for you, ask what you can do for my country!"

Slaveboy, Roger wasnt even a "Buff" (what we call over eager volleys) he was nothing! Just a scanner frog! Didnt even have a Basic EMT card. No training at all! Dont get me wrong, some of the "buffs" are seriously annoying but they usually burn out.... We cut waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back on Buff Recruitment by making home visits for membership committee interviews. If youre a grown man with Backdraft and Ladder 59 posters in your living room, you'll be on the waiting list a long damn time... The buffs with the lightbars is fucking hilarious. I dont have ANY lightbar on my vehicles. I have a bubble light I toss on the dashboard if I need it LOL. Otherwise its under the seat or in the console...

If ANYONE, no matter what they were wearing ever showed up at my door claiming NOT to need a warrant to search my home they would be greeted by a loaded firearm.

And by the way, if coke users can make the switch to meth, they can save alot of money, so why not go after the people who make cok........ OH NEVERMIND, I forgot about that, I mean who brings in the most coke into the country. I won't say right now.
