I spoke with my phone company today aout reducing the monthly cost of phone service at my house.  I decided to continue spending $24 a year to keep my phone number 'unpublished'.

I specifically asked the customer service rep if someone willing to pay a fee could get my street address from the 'net, using a 'background check service' or 'reverse directory' and the guy assured me no, they could not.

I wonder if anyone can prove or disprove this claim by ATT?

It can probably be revealed using a reverse look-up. Test it yourself.

No but they can get it at the courthouse if you own property. Property records (along with all other court records) are public record. Therefore someone can do a search for your name and get your address or vice-versa.

Thank you for the reminder, cyberdude.

Wonder what can be gotten from the voter registration data base?

But in both cases, they'd need my real name, first and last, which very few people have.

All a person needs to find your address is your name.  As cyberdude said, the companies like Intellius get that info from courthouse records, utility bills, tax records, and voting rolls.  It's not hard to find that info, and you don't really need those companies if you know where to look.

I don't even have a landline anymore; I have a cell phone and that's it.  At the moment, cell phone numbers aren't listed.  Intellius and companies like it can still find cell phone numbers from the same records though.  But I haven't had a landline in two years, and I haven't had any problems.  Of course, I can't imagine anyone trying to find out where I live.  It's not like I keep it a secret.

Reverse cell phone directory:

http://www.intelius.com/people-search-phone.html?PHPSESSID=ad25ceaf269f0358e5ffb3d998d71058

This Intelius company is pure evil, if it can do what it claims.  For a fee, it'll sell my name, age, address, address history, relative's info, etc. -- all based on my 'unpublished' number.

How is this legal?

Intellius doesn't always give accurate info, and your number probably belonged to someone before you.  The claims it makes don't always prove true.  It's legal, because they get that info from public records.  I know a lot of people think their life is a secret, but it's not.  It's all out there.  You can find out information on people if you know where to look and you have the time to dig for it.  You don't need Intellius to find that info.  You can do it yourself.

In my case, it would take a lot of digging.  I have a very common name.  In fact I think I came up with close to a million results once by googling my full name in quotes.  I looked my name up on Intellius once and limited that search to my state, and I still got over 100 matches.

Dont pay.

List your phone to the town only- not a street address, use first initial.    this much is free.

as to online pay to correct listed info= dont. while you might get results from one outlet- you dont from the off shoots of it.

also- on dumping the non-listed fee; a good time is right after new phone books come out.  like now.

im in the phone book 2 times.  both entries are wrong/expired.

zabasearch.com

And it's not 100% - I generally can get an address maybe 40% of the time from it and a phone number maybe 10% of the time.
