TheHeretic -> McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 6:49:33 PM)

I got my first good look today at one of the McCain - 2008 stickers, and noticed it incorporates a Nautical Star design.   I wasn't familiar with it until the last few years, when I started seeing it as a tattoo.  More than one person has told me it has been embraced as a white supremacist symbol, and that would probably apply to a percentage of the people I've seen wearing it.  A local tattoo artist tells me there isn't a historical connection, but he's taken plenty of money to put it on people who do see the connection.  It's also something I've only heard here on the edge of Manson County, and there are people out there who believe whatever their drunk neighbor made up the day before.

      So a couple of questions.

Have others heard of this old symbol being co-opted to a "White Pride" message?

If so, would you think the McCain people are intentionally putting some deniable rascist code into the visual medium of the race, or are they just too out of touch to know about it?  He was a sailor after all.

Arpig -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 7:31:43 PM)

I never heard that it was a white supremicist meaning

DomAviator -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 7:36:57 PM)

The man graduated the United States Naval Academy,  and was a Naval Aviator. He is the son and grandson of Admirals. His three sons went on to become a Naval Academy midshipman (John the 4th), a naval aviator (Doug), and a Marine (James)...

This is the man John McCain is http://www.johnmccain.com/BVID/

So no he doesnt have to run against Osama using the race card.... Although I have to ask, even of the star was a "white pride" symbol, which to my knowledge it is not and I know a hell of a lot of people in racist organizations, whats wrong with that? I mean why cant I have white pride? Should I be ashamed because my father married an Afrikaaner rather than a Kenyan??? I mean Im serious here - I have family - including a mom - who are Afrikaaners so should I be ashamed because they are white ???? Dad, what the hell did your lilly white Scottish-American ass have to go for that blonde blue eyed Afrikaaner for couldnt ya have gotten a black woman over there??? Should I hang my head in shame for not being mixed or better yet purebred anything other than white???

NumberSix -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 7:41:37 PM)

OK, DA---

he's a fuckin' squid of some sort.

Navy tattoos and all that.

It will not ever be the law of this land that you vote for someone via tattoo.

It is really cute but I can see my grandkids as really embarrassed teliling their grandkids how fucking ignorant the deal is.

What is a 'Nautical Star'?  I take it it is not a military medal of some sort?

Is this it?

A cursory search on Google didn't turn up any connection between hate groups and this symbol, identified by name.

What McCain ad have you seen using this symbol?  Could we please see it too?

Thank you, TheHeretic.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 7:49:47 PM)

I've heard of it being used by anti-racists and punks (as in punk rock, not prison bitches.  [:D]).  It wouldn't surprise me if white nationalists are using it.  I'll tell you something that makes me laugh my ass off about the Aryan Brotherhood.  They use the Celtic Cross, the shamrock, and 4 leaf clovers as symbols and tattoo it on themeselves.  Well if you go to the stormfront site, British white nationalists hate that symbol.  It's representative of the IRA, and british white nationalists are Ulster supporters.  Hell American white supremacists mostly hate the Catholic Church.  But they don't seem to understand that the Celtic Cross is a Catholic derived symbol.

It's ridiculous.  The 5 pointed star has been used by lots of people as a symbol, just like the swastika has been used for thousands of years.  If people want to attach some ridiculous meaning to it, than let them.

The link will take you to the original nautical star image, it was in a compas, and represented the north star.

Sailors wear the star tattoos for luck, the superstition is that it will bring them home.  That is the same reason many soldiers wear the nautical star tattoo.

As for racial connections, according to the latest information, it is not, since most racists will use Nazi linked symbols.

dcnovice -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 7:59:40 PM)

I'm about as diehard a Democrat as they come, and I can't imagine McCain's intentionally using a racist symbol.

NumberSix -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 8:03:40 PM)

well, of course, it is the marking of jews.

LOL.

When you see the southern cross for the first time...........

You caught me in the process of proofing, jif.  My post now contains a link to 'the nautical star' my search turned up -- and asks for a link to a McCain ad -- not a McCain! -- using the symbol.  LOL.

Your image and mine are not the same, jif.  Mine is a five-pointed star and has no circle around it.

Humm.

Anyway, jif, what serves as the basis for your claim that the nautical star -- whatever it looks like -- has not been used by any hate groups?  (Just curious how one would determine this.)

According to his official web site, McCain was in the Navy -- seems reasonable he'd trumpet his naval service.

BTW, I desperately need someone to explain to me -- the technotard  -- how to use a hyperlink!  I hate photobucket!

I keep a close eye on the racist movement and can't remember seeing the nautical star, the symbol or name, in or on anything associated with racists. It could be a local thing that hasn't spread enough to get noticed but I strongly doubt McCain would be using it if that connatation was well known.

The folks at the SPLC would likely know.
(Note: The SPLC is a Jewish commie group which harasses God-fearing, patriotic freedom-loving grassroots groups dedicated to assisting lower-income whites to assert their rights. /sarcasm)

TheHeretic -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 8:48:55 PM)

The particular one I saw was on a car, a black oval with white lettering.  That particular item doesn't show up here, but the star is widely used in logos.

I didn't come up with anything either, from a quick search, Ken.  I first heard it when I was trying to distract myself by making conversation with a tattooist, and have seen it on the necks of a few people with "white" and "pride" above the elbows, along with hearing the story repeated.

DomAviator -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/3/2008 9:05:48 PM)

Oh thats nothing! I actually use that as one of the design elements in my company logo! [:D] The intention there is "Charting your course to excellence..." I would say that is the McCain meaning as well....

OOOOOH, I have heard of that... The stars on th neck thing is some kind of a prison tattoo. Ill have to ask my friend at the sherrifs dept, I think its like "done hard time" or somehing to show that youre not fresh meat in for the first time but Im not sure. I have heard of the stars on the neck thing in a prison tat setting, kind of like some hispanic gang that gets a teardrop for a killing....  I dont think its the same star though... I mean that star McCain uses is worn on the shoulderboards of Admirals... (and Generals)

Edited to add: I just called her. A star on the neck means that you have served time in prison. Each point represents a year so a guy who did  10 year stint will have 2 five pointed stars, five years 1 star and so forth. On the neck means you were paroled and on the knees mean you did the full stint cause you refused to kneel to the parole board. Its not affiliated with a particular gang or race its just a con thing....

Just a heads up that this site doesn't seem to be directly associated with McCain. His official campaign site does sell material with the star though.
http://store.johnmccain.com/

But this doesn't strike me as some sort of subtle white power symbol. It is a fairly common depiction of a star and does have naval connotations.

Vendaval -> RE: McCain and the Nautical Star (7/4/2008 1:10:24 AM)

What's up Rich?

I looked at the stars on the McCain site and then checked for nautical symbols and tattoos.

http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/tattoos_designs_symbols_nautical_star.htm

One of the waiters at a sushi place downtown has a pair of these stars on the back of his elbows, black ink for the outside line and red for color and shaping.  He has full sleeve tattoos on on both arms and dresses skater/surfer.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... and the Obama "knuckle bump" is a terrorist gang sign...

This is the best people can come up with to cast McCain in a bad light? This is the kind of thing they can come up with? Because I can think of several, far more relevant reasons to not vote for him...

1) His age... (he'll be 83 by the time he finished his first term)
2) He knows nothing about how the economy works (self admitted)
3) He can't seem to keep the various factions in Iraq straight.
4) He hangs out with "swift boaters for lies."
5) He is under the impression that gas costs about $2.50 a gallon.
6) He's "flip-floped" on about a dozen very important issues.
7) His idea of a comprehensive energy plan is to offer "prizes."
