Top ten things Jesse Helms doesn't like about Heaven.

Too many Jews
Too many Gays
Too many Blacks
Too many Mexicans
Too many Chineese
Too many Democrats
Too many poor
Too many meek
Too many peacemakers

and number one:

Can't find an American flag anywhere.

Just letting you know where all the American flags are so you can claim them back any time you like.

I shall deeply mourm the passing of this distinguished statesman who did so much for the GOP, as well as this great nation. This was a great man, who did much for his state, who brought the GOP to North Carolina, who was instrumental in the election of President Ronald Reagan, who crusaded for human rights and against Fidel Castro and who brought the grieving familes of the downed KAL FLight 007 closure and answers.  This man was a great figure in American politics and we need more like him... He will be sorely missed - I hope they play Dixie at his funeral... He loved that song and was a great patriot.

In listening to NPR today it seemed that Helms was unabashedly himself. He never pretended to be anything else --- and I suppose this is what NC voters liked about him.

He was very black and white and unchanging in his stances and views. Conservatives tend to value such a viewpoint, whereas others would see such a worldview as childish and overly simplistic.

It funny that he turned being "Mr. No" into a positive political attribute.

I found it interesting too that he ran an efficient, responsive office to his political constituents. I tend to dislike idealogues, but I respect a guy who helps the folks he represents.

He and Bono became buddies there towards the end. I wonder if he had at least some change of heart on certain things.

Why does ever fucking thing have to be about race? I simply dont get it???? He certainly got answers for the KAL 007 families??? Many of whom were Asian - ya know like KOREAN??? He aslo advocated for the CUBANS who were oppressed  by castro???? Are Cubans particularly light skinned? How about the steps he took to stop the spread of communism and leftist revolutionaries in Latin America? Hmmmm wouldnt those be Hispanics like the Cubans???

See this is why there are bigots, because every fucking thing with certain minority members has to a racial issue... Do they have an inferiority complex or what? Why cant they just fit in and get with the program instead of crying race... The man did a lot of good for people who were non-caucasion, but even his death has to be a "poor us" whiny assed racial issue....

Oh Level....You really are all that's lovely and hopeful in this country

After hiding in earthen holes in the ground, Saddam Hussein might have had a change of heart too...but the damage was done, right?  Maybe there was a moment in die bunker when Die Fuhrer turned and looked at Eva und said, "Mein Kampf...perhaps i should re-examine it"  Maybe today Robert Mugabe wants to issue a statement "My bad...do over???"   Get my point???????

Of course I do, tulip; if he did have a change of heart, that's a good thing, but it doesn't make everything else go away.

Jesse Helms was at first a democrat and a true racist. He assisted other democrats (dixiecrats) who wanted to maintain segregation. He actually is quoted as saying in 1963:

"The Negro cannot count forever on the kind of restraint that's thus far left him free to clog the streets, disrupt traffic, and interfere with other men's rights." The obvious suggestion being that the Negro can't count on enjoying the same consitutional rights as others say...white men fro example and thus coundn't 'count' on being able to publicly assemble for a redress of their grievances.

(Have to go to K St. In Wash. and spend millions...then you get a redress of grievances...it's called plutocracy)

He opposed the civil rights bill and after its passage he took up his racist and intolerant mantel and ran as a republican and won a senate seat in 1972.

Maybe level was right and he had a change of heart about a few things like George Wallace but I am sorry, in both men...way too late for me and thus was hardly a great man.

You go.  That man has to be one of the South's biggest bigots this side of George Wallace.
I wish his family well, but he did nothing for women and blacks in his state and played a huge role in the Senate to keep oppression going.
