angelwithhonor -> did anyone see law and order? (7/6/2008 3:04:15 PM)

.....i hardly ever post. Did anyone see the eposode  on law and order (i know that may be the spelling) that was about this man who had his wife. But kepted a girl slave under his bed as a cage ? He beat her and kepted her that way for 6 months. the wife said she was just to be taught and punished. The wife was glad that he kepted this girl bc she wasnt the one being beat. But what i seen in this pc of the show was, the twisted way the vanilla looks at the bdsm lifetstyle. it was harsh and raw to say the least. do you think ppl in the vanilla world see it so harsh ?

That is a crime show.  Pretty much anything can be seen in a bad light.  That case though was a fictionalized story about something that really happened.  There was a guy who kept a girl in a box under his bed.  There have been men who keep slaves in basements, in boxes, in storage sheds ect.  It is not bdsm the way we know it, but it is sadistic, it is slavery, and it happens.  We are just painted with the broad brush when it does.

I didn't see the Law and Order episode you are referring to, but from what you said it sounds like an actual case that occurred in California about 20 years ago.  A man and wife kidnapped a hitchhiker and kept her as a slave for several years.  Part of it was that she was kept in basically a box under their bed.  There is a book about it, but I do not recall the title.

The point is that this incident has nothing to do with BDSM.  This was a criminal act.  There was nothing consentual about it.

Many people in the "vanilla" world do not differentiate between this sort of criminal activity and the bdsm lifestyle, but I think that is changing at a rapid rate.

...you know , guess i didnt think of it as a crime scene instead of a true bdsm relationship. thank you for the response. i love that show and yes many are cases that are true. actually some are really hard to watch when i comes to the well being a children.

It is unfortunate that many dramatic shows such as Law & Order will write a storyline with elements of WIITWD and strictly portray the uglier side of BDSM. As of yet, A few episodes of CSI with the Lady Heather character did attempt to explain the motives of people who participate in BDSM activities in a more informative light. I am wise enough to fully understand that in any sub culture of society we have people who do take things to the far negative extreme which seems to have a greater impact on public perceptions then trying to educate and simply make the majority understand the positive aspects. In most cases, the vanilla do see us as being extreme, perverts, etc yet they fail to see that we are still living and breathing human beings.
I don't expect everyone to fully accept my kink inclinations, all I want is to have people understand that this is who I am. Understanding does bring awarness though it may not bring acceptance which is fine with me: at least it should bring some measure of tolerance.

This was actually replayed on the L&O:SVU marathon today.  I was watching it, and then later saw this thread, and have to comment.  You know, these crime shows (to which I am hopelessly addicted) depict all sorts of things that are accepted in society as normal, and then show how they can be warped to be criminal.  Religious convictions, family life, the love of a parent for a child, friendship, dating, marriage, etc.  I'd be more surprised if they never included WIITWD and showed how those actions can become criminal.

It's a point that we all do well to keep in mind - that when it becomes non-consensual, it moves into criminal realms.  Keeping someone chained, collared, and confined against her will for 6 months is as unrelated to consensual BDSM as rape is to consensual sex.

yes i saw that episode you're talking about. it's titled "Slaves" guest starring Andrew McCarthy as the sicko husband. it was very creepy how he kept that girl hidden under the bed ...the pictures they showed were horrid.

I'm sure that some who are appalled with the horror that is or can be bdsm, but i think for the most part...its just somethign that vanillas have no interest/knowledge in, and simply dont understand.  I'm sure there are plenty vanilla kinksters who dont mind a spank here and there...throw in some fluffy handcuffs and they are golden...its the emotional/mental aspect of the lifestyle that they cant relate to.
