With all the talk in the UK media about us Brits fleeing in our thousands, (and how) does anyone in or outside the UK feel the same? Personally there are no job opportunities in the field I want to work in here.

I'll never be able to get my foot on that first housing ladder, and I'm throwing money away by renting. The price of fuel is ridiculous and is only going to get worse. Atm I'm paying £1.18 per litre that's like $2.30.

The NHS is rubbish, we really don't have free health care, I have to pay for my dentist, which btw is private. Eyecare, and medication. The only free thing we get on the NHS is consultations from GP's who don't give a fuck and normally mis-diagnose anyway. And emergency care.

I'm hoping with the new immigration rules to hop over to Canada for a better quality of living. I know with Australia you have to have £2000 in the bank to go over on a working visa, is this the same for Canada. If anyone knows this would be appreciated.

chokealone -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 5:55:31 AM)

Are you saying that all Canadians are not capable of constructing a real sentence?

housesub4you -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 5:58:23 AM)

No, no not at all.  I'm just poking fun at a stereotype of Canadians, coming from someone who travels up there quite abit.

I have no knowledge on their ability to correctly form sentences.

chokealone -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:02:15 AM)

Oh right, sorry I don't have any stereotypes of them, apart from the Mountie's ''they always get their man''. Do you travel to anywhere nice?

pahunkboy -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:06:33 AM)

My experience with Canadians is that they are well educated, and very nice.

The country has a ton of red tape.

Years ago- I worked at a hotel where a UK girl was- she said things are so much easier here.  Thats hard for me to imagine.

I would live in Canada.  It isnt as extreme as the US.   Toronto impressed me.   Thats probaly your best bet.  What is your line of work?

housesub4you -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:07:35 AM)

Yes but it's never in Canada.

I travel into Ontario for fishing and hunting trips and once or twice a year I travel up to Edmonton to see the Chicago Blackhawks lose.

Where are you moving to in Canada?

pahunkboy -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:10:17 AM)

A gay buddy of mine LOVEs Montreal.   I talked to some guy on the phone there once for 7 hours.

Tho- I think the French have a rivalry there...

Termyn8or -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:34:35 AM)

The hell you say, I was thinking of coming there !

But I am in the US, actually Canada sounds pretty good, but my kind does not cut and run.

Once you convert your currency, and establish you modus here, you will have between four and six months to live on it, in that time you need to get a job. And that estimate is assuming you have no habits that are expensive, and you know how to budget.

What skills do you have ? That is important. The fact of the matter is that if you can't make forty grand a year here (that is about 20K in GBP) , you are likely to be unhappy, and at that point, stuck. You might be paying seven or eight bucks a gallon for gas, but we are not far behind, once you file US taxes you will know what I mean, but I am not sure about Canada. And if you have any physical problems, go to Canada, here they will just let you die. I can come up with cites from this very website on that.

Emigration is a serious issue, for those who think. You are not Mexican so don't expect any freebies. I know of no monetary requirement to get what's called an H1B visa in the US, and I have no idea about Canada.

But now comes an important point, there is no work in your field of endeavour, just what is that field ? Certain types of professionals are afforded some degree of favoritism. If a guy you worked for won a Nobel prize for cancer research, you are likely to do beter than a shock jock (ala Don Imus). Everybody on the street is a a shock jock, and probably everyone in this house.

Weigh the costs, the relative oppotunities FOR YOU before making a move like this. It may be found that it is better to improve your lot in life there, in your own element, a bit more before heading to the colonies.

It's your call, welcome to life as we know it.

chokealone -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:34:55 AM)

Well I don't have one place in mind at the moment. Pahunkboy, I want to work with animals. I currently volenteer at my local cattery, and I used to own horses and work at a stables. However there are no jobs in animal care in the north of the UK. I have been trying to get into vet nursing. but to be one in the Uk you have to find a placement at a vets, and work there whislt going on day release to a college one day a week. Which is great for me, as I am a practical learner.

Thing is, it's expensive to be a Traning Practice (TP) and so most vet's don't offer there vets as a TP. So for every one job there are 20applicants. us Brit's aren't the big pet lovers we make out to be. If we were, then there would be some form of goverment training into this profession. But there is nothing.

housesub4you -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:48:20 AM)

I send you a link to your profile of an Exotic Animal Farm I know of looking for help here in the USA.  It's not Canada, but the winters are shorter.

chokealone -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 6:59:17 AM)

Thanks for that. Anything helps, although I'm not sure I could survive in America, plus I'd be moving with my partner too.

housesub4you -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 7:02:55 AM)

You're welcome.  We ain't that bad here in the US.  perhaps your partner could get a job explaing the rules of Football (soccer) to us in the local pubs.
Dam Trotters what a horrible season!

GreedyTop -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 7:23:12 AM)

choke.. heh..and I'm trying to get moved to the UK..LOL  I don't have any knowledge of CAnadian immigration..
Here's the immigrations Website : Canadian Immigration

chokealone -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 7:33:19 AM)

I got that link cheers. one question though, why are earth are you considering living here? One of the reasons I couldn't live in the USA is b/c the wages are too low, a bit like the UK. I'd love to live in Florida though, I did want to work for WDW's Animal Kingdom at some point but Steve Jobs pays a pityful £2.30 an hour last time I checked! That's lower than my bus fare into the city.

GreedyTop -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 8:16:17 AM)

Bigcatrescue

I've always wanted to live in the UK...:) thats teh short answer..lol  plus, assuming I can find a job there, I'd actually get paid more than I do now..(which, honestly, wouldnt take much..lol).  It's not going to happen any time soon, though.. its going to take me finding a job here, moving into management, then transferring there..

engrish? who cares... all we care about in canada is HOCKEY.  so if your coming here you have to know about the NHL.  whos good and whos crap... heads up: toronto maple leafs SUCK.

if you are coming here...you MUST see the movies STRANGE BREW and CANADIAN BACON before you enter canada.

housesub4you -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 9:24:49 AM)

1 thing you might want to try before you move for good.  I use to run a simmer camp in Wisconsin for kids and we would hire people from all over the world for the summer.  The pay was not much, but you got airfare, free food, free housing and at the camp I ran 2 days off per week.

It's to late for this summer, but I'm sure they do the same thing in Canada.  This will give you a chance to experience the country, and look for jobs on your days off and it won't cost you a thing.

There are web sites for summer jobs overseas, I forgot the name of the company we used to get workers from

LadyRainfire -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 9:30:41 AM)

[:D]  And be familiar with the Canadian Conspiracy.

OP, I just moved to Canada from the US, to be with Daddy. (Lumus here on the boards.) Greedy beat me to the link I was going to send you, but if you immigrate to Canada on your own, you have to show that you can post a $10,000 bond if you're single. You have to be able to prove that you can financially support yourself for "X" amount of time, including having so much available assets. When you immigrate, you're not eligible for any public assistance or the health care plan for some time so you have to prove that you won't need financial help.

Feel free to cmail me on the other side if you have more questions, I'd be glad to answer any that I can.

ETA - yes, I am in the middle of the legal process of immigrating to Canada.... [8|] I'm up to my ears in laws and regs.

GreedyTop -> RE: emigration (7/7/2008 9:35:49 AM)

one thing to consider is that it may be easier for a Brit to emmigrate, since Canada is nominally under British rule, isn't it?
