It is widely accepted that following the Congress' chosing to found the Corp on November 10, 1775 (our birthday), a group of Naval officers went to Dun's Tavern in Philadelphia. They soon found a likely lad and plying him with beer got him to sign enlistment papers. That completed, they gave him another beer and asked him to wait at a near-by table. Boy could I tell some good stories when it comes to ''Gate two street'' , '' the JP's'' and of course ''Olongapo City'' But we won't go there now.... HAR!! 10 November 2005 A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS On November 10th, 1775, the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Continental Marines marking the birth of our United States Marine Corps. As Major General Lejeune’s message reminds us, the ensuing generations of Marines would come to signify all that is highest in warfighting excellence and military virtue. Each November as Marines the world over celebrate the birth of our Corps, we pay tribute to that long line of “Soldiers of the Sea” and the illustrious legacy they have handed down to us. This past year has been one of continuous combat operations overseas and distinguished service here at home – a year of challenges that have brought out the very best in our Corps. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Marine courage and mastery of complex and chaotic environments have truly made a difference in the lives of millions. Marine compassion and flexibility provided humanitarian assistance to thousands in the wake of the South East Asian Tsunami, and here at home, Marines with AAVs, helicopters, and sometimes with their bare hands saved hundreds of our own fellow Americans in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Across the full spectrum of operations, you have showcased that Marines create stability in an unstable world, and have reinforced our Corps’ reputation for setting the standard of excellence. The sense of honor, courage, and patriotism that epitomized those who answered that first call to arms 230 years ago is still indelibly imprinted on our ranks today. In commemorating our anniversary, let us strengthen our ties to the past by paying homage to those who have gone before us. As we honor the sacrifices of our wounded and fallen comrades, our commitment to one another remains unshakable. We take special pride in the actions of the Marines now serving in harm’s way, and rededicate ourselves to the service of our Nation and our Corps. But what I did do and am definitely guilty of, is lend money to the ''sinners'' at an exaggerated interest rate a few days before payday. Edited to add - John caught me off guard. One wouldn't normally forget about both the bridge and stench of Olongapo so soon! - The Ranger

I just had two friends make a quick visit at my office. One is a retired USN Captain who did his last 10 years as a flight surgeon with USMC rotary wing aviation units. He considers himself a Marine, has USMC bumper stickers all over his vehicle, member of the MCL, etc. The other fellow is a retired Marine Major, served in Korea and Vietnam. Dr. Frank was wearing his navy dress uniform w/ sword, Major Charlie was wearing his dress blue "B" uniform. They're both pretty old guys, like 71 and 68, but they both looked great. Stood tall and straight, uniforms clean and correct, and damned if those old-timers didn't turn a few heads as they walked out to go to a Veterans lunch our historical society was hosting. God bless 'em!

A special thanks to all the service men and women, as well as all the volunteers (USO, Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc.) who served them so well, and to all their families..those who wait also serve, in ways that those who do and those who never did either could ever truly appreciate. warmest regards (and hugs) jimini
